Blur must have known they were tempting fate as they recorded album 6 in Studio 13, in London. What they came up with was the most hotly debated of all their albums. While before the consensus has been pretty clear-cut ('Leisure' = Average, 'Modern Life...', 'Parklife' and 'Blur' = classics, 'The Great Escape' = awful and sublime in equal measures), '13' had critics puzzling over what to say. So this is probably why you're still wanting opinions on if it's any good.
'13' was the first Blur album not to be produced by Stephen Street, and the production techniques used by William Orbit (Madonna, All Saints) shape this album more than any other input. Advantages: Diversity of the music. Disadvantages: Takes a while to get into if you're not an enthusiast.
I am a great Blur fanatic so obviously this will be a biased review!
I know, from other debates etc, that opinions of this album seem to swing to extremes - either love or hate it seems. Admittedly, when I first listened to it, I wasn't sure. However, one of Blur's definite plus-points as a band is their diversity of musical styles and lyrics over their whole career to date and I think "13" reflects that beautifully.
The singles from this album are the 'obvious' tracks in my opinion - commercially viable, catchy tunes etc, but there are hidden gems in their aswell - "Swamp Song" and "B.L.U.R.E.M.I." being two of my personal favourites!
It's this diversity with Blur that I love - not many bands these days display so many different sides to their music, you can hear influences fron punk to gospel to new wave to dance and beyond ...
