I was a regular Economy class traveller with Lufthansa for 1 year between Heathrow and Frankfurt.

From my experiences with other airlines I would rate them as 'average'. The flights I had were almost always overbooked leading to myself joining the standby queue on occasions. Despite the overbooking and delays leaving Frankfurt, the majority of my flights landed on time which I see as a very good quality of service. The food in Economy is of a poor standard, the beer was ok, but the wine always seemed to be served with bits of cork floating in it! Given the prices my company was paying for flying with Lufthansa, I would not recommend them. However, the quality of service was reasonable, so given a reasonable price I would fly with them again.

If you are delayed by more than 1 hour (I think that is the EC guideline) you are entitled to compensation of approximately £200. Lufthansa once tried to give me this in the form of airline vouchers (I got upgraded in the end though). In the terms and conditions when flights are booked, there is a section which specifies what compensation you are entitled to - it states that you are entitled to airline vouchers or cash (the passengers choice!). Make sure that you push for this - I think it is an EC regulation so should apply across European flights.
