Flew transatlantic with Lufthansa. Their before-travel service was excellent. Check in staff were helpful, polite and answered all our queries well. The cabin crew were wonderful, fetching us replacement headphones (ours were broken), chatting, bringing extra drinks even before we requested them, and generally being friendly and efficient.
The transition to their US partner United Airlines went smoothly, although onward flight from Washington was delayed because of storms (they all were).
In fact we had no problems whatsoever, even when my travelling companion of 6'4 was sitting in a regular seat - plenty of legroom, which surprised us somewhat.
(I saw passengers travelling with infants nearby, and they also thought the service was great. Bassinets available, bottles heated, staff amusing the children and bringing toys or other distractions when they got tired and started crying.)
The only disadvantage was that Frankfurt airport has more smoking areas than non-smoking. Coming from the UK, where it is definitely the other way around, it was a bit of a shock, but no trouble at all to find the comfortable cafe areas where smoking was not allowed.
In summary, great airline - would heartily recommend them to anyone.
