I have found that Lufthansa has improved a lot in recent years. Connections from the United Kingdom to hub airports like Frankfurt and Munich are really very good.

On the down side, I have always found it difficult to obtain well priced fares direct on their own website, and instead, have opted to search for Lufthansa flights on travel portals, which always seem to come in cheaper. Check out Expedia and eBookers for example.

On the groud, they have good check in facilities - via the web, internet and so on, and their lounges are not too bad at all. For example, they do light catering in the First and Star Alliance Gold lounges in Frankfurt, as well as free showers if you're arriving off a long haul flight, or just generally need to scrub up.

In the air, I have travelled economy, which is more than adequate on short haul flights, but the economy product on long haul is still quite basic in comparison to some other competitors. For example, the in flight entertainment isn't that wonderful, and neither is the catering.

However, when flying business class on long haul (as I have occassionally done) I have found the service to be very good indeed. Catering was wonderful and the at seat entertainment and net connectivity kept me occupied for ours! I usually plan to sleep on long haul flights, but business class on Lufthansa kept me awake!

You should definately sign up to the Star Alliance frequent flyer programme if you're going to fly with Lufthansa regulary. As a gold member, I have been frequently upgraded to business class when flying with them.

All in all, a very good airline, and hailing from north of the border, it's much more of a pleasure transiting via Frankfurt than it is to go via Heathrow.
