Every May I dream about going on one of those cheapo bargain breaks. You know the one I mean £99 for a week some where nice and hot. Well this year I decided sod the bank manager I'm going!!!
My mission there for was to find a cheap and I mean cheap holiday for my daughter and I.
My first port of call was to try the online travel agents. Well after about an hour I was really no further on. Some sites where good others were down right awful and to be honest the bargains were few and far between.
Next stop was to flick throw teletext to find a few free phone numbers. I was particularly tempted by a couple of Greek holidays so armed with a pen and paper and my bit of plastic I rang a couple of companies. One offered to ring me back and never did. Another company really did try their best to accomadate, my requests of half decent flight times, ie not at the dead of night. But this would have meant departing from Manchster and returning to Gatwick!! Then we had others that sounded really good but the amount of extra's on top meant that a so called £99 holiday ended up being nearer £200 per person. None of the firms were able to give me a named resort let alone named accomadation. I gave up!!!
To be honest I'd always looked on the high st travel agents as non bargain places how wrong I was!!
I spotted a card in Lunn Poly's window advertising holidays in Rhodes for £99. The assistant so confirmed that this holiday was available but unfortunately was a club 18 to 30 holiday. Being too old and my daughter too young, she then set about looking for another holiday. Suddenly up came a holiday to Rhodes with named accomadation, for the princely sum of £109 each. After looking in brouchure I was gob smacked to find that this holiday would have been over £500 each if we had booked it months ago. BUT then came the flight times we would leave Rhodes at 5am in the morning - the thought of being "homeless" till the early hours really didn't appeal but another search came up with better flights the much coveted day flights!! My heart sank a wee bit as I wondered how much this would add onto the holiday but nope the basic price was still the same!! With all the extras involved ie transfers, tickets on departure and insurance it worked out at just over £150 per person.
One minor hic up was the fact that my passport expires in August and the assistant was unsure if Greece was one of those countries that demands you have 6 months left on it. One call to the Greek embassy confirmed I would be allowed in. Extras such as veggie meals were booked for me.
To be honest I got a far better bargain by going to the High St. The face to face service in my opinion was far better than hanging on the end of a phone and if I ever do a bargain hunt again I'll just go straight to Lunn Poly
The "extra 6 months on your passport" thing always makes me wonder. Do they think their countries are so good you'll want to stay longer? Or are these the countries whose passport controls take forever so you need to be able to stay loner to get a decent holiday?
