Hving a friend who lives near Luton airport is handy. But only when the friend can pick you up!
Having followed EasyJet's advertising with some skepticism, I decided to try it out for myself. The airline itself was very nice, left on time, and had pleasant staff.
When I asked about the train into London, they couldn't tell me how much it cost, or where to change for my connecting train. I tried another person, and this time got a response. He gave me lots of information, and told me to change at London Bridge for Bromley. I asked "Are you sure there's a train on Sundays?" He was very sure. Positive, in fact.
He was SO wrong.
I had to phone the people I was staying with, and ask them to collect me from Orpington instead. And then I had to pay a penalty fine because Orpington is farther out than Bromley.
I do not like Luton. If you're going into London, forget it. Use London City (LCY) instead.

I didn't find Luton airport that easy to get to either. Especially using a rail service for late and early flights. Our way around this was to get a taxi, worked out far cheaper for three than buying rail tickets and much less stressful.

Not sure I follow your complaint. Are you saying the rail ticket office couldn't tell you how much a ticket cost or when the trains ran? I don't see how you can blame an airport because you live a long way away from it. It's convenient to those north west of London and has good connections being close to the M1 J10 and also on a cross London rail line (Bedford all the way to Brighton) with a fast service to central London. According to the railtrack site there are frequent Sunday services (3 an hour at this time) from Luton Airport to Bromley South with the journey taking 1h25 or 1h39 involving one change at either Herne Hill or Blackfriars.

Advantages: Readily accessible, offering many short and long haul destinations. Disadvantages: Luton could benefit from better hotel and conference facilities
