I hadn't been to Luton Airport for about three years until I flew to Majorca from there in June. I heard that they had been making great improvements to the departure lounge and that, indeed, work was still very much in progress. Well was I disappointed with one of our 'premier' package holiday airports? Yep, you bet. What a tip! We were flying out at around midnight. The airport was not too busy. There were a few Easyjet flights going out - all seemed to be delayed too. Plus three or four departures for the Med. Facilities were desperately limited for the ordinary traveller. They have a 'food court' - a Cafeteria area, Bar and takeaway. But despite the airport being hardly at its busiest point of the season, you couldn't get a seat or a table up there. So, back downstairs to sit on the comfy seats in the main Departure area. Plenty of those, but nothing to do except sit and wait. Oh yes, part of the improvements is a 'traditional pub' that is just the other side of the Duty Free. Maybe that was the answer. Checked it out around 10pm - three customers in there. I didn't want alcohol, just somewhere we could sit and maybe watch TV relax or something. Decided to try the Pub at 10-30pm, went back - CLOSED! Sorry....a pub closed at 10-30pm - especially in an airport with customers waiting. Having been to the USA and used Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Detroit airports, they all have facilities which are pretty much on call 24 hours. TV Screens there so you can watch Sport or CNN. Wide selection of Snack Bars serving anything from Chinese, Cappuccino, Waffles etc. God, we have a lot to learn. Yes I know Luton is no Heathrow or Gatwick, but Stansted, Luton's nearest local rival kncks Luton into a cocked hat. Much more pleasant and comfortable. And another thing - in Luton's departure lounge - not one Cashpoint machine - so if you wanted to splash out on that one little extra, but only had yo u foreign currency with you - tough! Improvements are underway - Boy are they needed!

Tell me about it - we flew out from Luton early hours of Tuesday morning, and arrived early thinking we could have a relax and something to eat, not to mention a few beers, particularly as every single service station on the M4 was shut BEFORE Midnight - there was no hot food catering facilities and when checking in, only sandwiches were available, even the bar was shut - the bar and Cardiff, catering facilities, shops and duty free are open at Cardiff all the time there are flights going in and out - people think we are in a backwater down here in wales, well Luton Airport Management I suggest you take a little trek down the M4 and see what gives in our backwater - totally agree with you and I was very very disappointed - I see your op is dated July 2000, well little has changed as at 01/2002.
