I have been 12 times and can give you some good tips for your holiday.Hotels - hilton:lovely but far out, peaceful situation in the countryside at the side of the Nile. Movenpicke - best for families with children - great walks, felucca trips and bird watching. Sheraton - busy noisy pool with cruise ships belching out fumes when tied up there. Sonesta - very flash, small pool, rooms on road side very noisy.Winter palace - delightful but the tower block in the New part is tatty. Gardens and pool lovely and all very handy for the centre. rub shoulders with rich and famous - if you like that sort of thing!! Book flight only and find Egyptian travel agents on the web to get much better value rooms. Avoid Cruises unless you want to be herded like sheep and sunbathe by a postage-stamp pool. Get a train or bus to Aswan and cruise on your own felucca for about £7 for half a day. Be adventurous and arrange you own excursions and visits in cheap taxis.Nothing could be easier! Food is cheap but get booze from Duty free within 24 hours of arrival. All banks and hotel banks give same exchange rates. Buy your visa when you arrive. All taxi drivers want to rip you off so be firm and take your time - they love to rush you and confuse you!! A wonderful town Karnak at dawn before the crowds arrive is amazing!!
