I had never been on an aeroplane let alone had an exotic holiday but with our 25th anniversay coming up decided it would be romantic to go to Egypt and stand in the the Valley of the Kings on the day.
Of course just boarding the plane and flying was exciting, but when the aeroplane landed and i found myself in Egypt i felt like i had been transported to a different world.
We went on a three night cruise up the Nile and spent the rest of the week in Luxor.
It was in May so it was very hot a pleasant heat though and absolutely wonderful.
The cruise was beautiful, the scenery enchating, the Thebian Hills beautiful and children waving as the cruise boat went by happy contented children, genuinely pleased to see us.
The Itineray included the Aswan Dam, the Valley of the Kings and Queens and Edfu. I cant begin to describe to you the magic of these places.
We also went to Luxor temple and The Sound and Light Show at Karnack Temple. I think Karnack Temple along with the Valley of the Kings and Queens was the highlight of the trip. The monuments were massive, breathtakingand the atmosphere was that of spiritual as if time had stopped an awesome feeling.
The whole thing was like being taken back to Bible times with donkeys carrying the sugar beet etc.
I have had quite a few holidays since, but nothing has ever compared with Egypt so far.
You may think im painting a rosey picture and I am because it was a wonderful experience, but there was a downside. The aggravation from the sellers was awful they were at you all the time you couldnt go anywhere or do anything without someone springing out at you trying to sell their wares. We tried to be as nice as possible but in the end found ourselves getting quite annoyed because they were so persistent. However of course there is great poverty there I can understand why they do it.
Having said that the Egyptian people are generally charming, because im blonde they would stand and stare in awe and point and giggle but they had great respect for us.
They are contented people, friendly its just theyre way of selling things, the way they think they should do it.
A couple of years ago we went back via a cruise to see the Pyramids, and that caught us completely differently, there was p.... taking from the locals a lot of hassle and the whole experience was not nice, it was awesome to see the Pyramids but it was much more commercialised there and the locals had a completely different attitude towards the tourists.
Theres also the question of safety, but the second time we went, due to the killings there we were heavily guarded with security men yielding dogs and guns, so we didnt really feel unsafe at all.
All in all i would say if you have ever wondered whether you might like to go i would say its got to be the best holiday so far that i have had. Its an experience well worth having.
