To be honest, when ‘The Luxor’ first opened in 1992 I was in Las Vegas at the time staying at the ‘Mirage’ and as a boy in my late teens I thought it looked a little bit tacky and uninspiring. It may have had something to do with the fact that I was staying in one of the higher echelon hotels on the strip and was surrounded by other sensational hotels such as ‘Caesars’ and the ‘MGM Grand’.

It lacked that bit of aura, that mystique that comes with a Las Vegas Casino and Hotel complex. The idea was pretty cool: build a 30-story black pyramid in the middle of the desert and put in hotel rooms and a casino with an Egyptian theme, but it just didn’t have the feel or look of something to rival the big Casino’s.

However once the Mandalay Resorts (the owners of the property) threw a few million dollars (around 300 to be precise) into the place it was remodelled from top to bottom. As a result ‘The Luxor’ has become one of the most interesting, fun, and appealing hotels on the strip, and this is a big statement considering the SERIOUS competition for customers on that stretch of tarmac.

From the outside, ‘The Luxor’ captures the imagination and essentially for the Las Vegas strip has a unique look that makes it a landmark site. The recreation of the Sphinx guards the valet parking and there are more hieroglyphics than you can shake an obelisk at. It is an awe-inspiring site morning, noon and night.

The entryway takes you directly to the huge casino and hotel complex which rises all the way to the top of the pyramid (a sight to behold) and as you walk in you are flanked by two huge statues of Rhamses. Just to the right of the front doors is the beautiful lobby decked in rich marble and cherry wood with a vaguely art-deco theme. It really does set the tone.

The casino itself is open and airy with lots of fun, kitschy Egyptian details. While a lot of the other hotels have gone upscale with their casinos, slathering marble and wallpaper everywhere, the Luxor has remained entertaining. It really seems to be all about having fun here. A particularly appealing point to note is that of all the Las Vegas casino's, 'The Luxor' along with 'Circus Circus' does focus on family entertainment within a relaxed setting more than the rest. Children will certainly love the pyramid itself, housing high-tech entertainment and elevators that travel at a 39-degree angle.

Rooms in the aforementioned pyramid have sloping glass walls that make them a bigger, and more interesting, than your standard Vegas box. The decor is Egyptian (of course) but they wisely restrain themselves from going overboard with the whole thing because any theme gets tiresome after a while.

Rooms in the newer towers don't have the sloped ceilings but are truly stunning with amazingly rich art-deco/Egyptian detail work, etched glass sconces and the like. No matter which room you choose you're going to know where you are, which is a nice change of pace from the motel style rooms which are offered in other parts of the city.

I’ve had the pleasure of staying in several of the Las Vegas Hotels and both the standard and luxury rooms at ‘The Luxor’ are the equal or better of than many of the other offerings. Also worth a mention, if you can afford one of the Upper level "Jacuzzi Rooms" then you will not be disappointed, particularly by the whirlpool tub under the sloped glass which gives an amazing view of whole town and surrounding desert backdrop.

On the negative side I have had one incident when checking out took an hour, but then again this was 4th July and trying to check out at 10am was not really the best utilisation of my time. Other than that (which was arguably a fault of my own poor time management) I can honestly say that my experiences of 'The Luxor' have been nothing but positive.

Of course there are several restaurants, including the Pharaoh’s Pheast Buffet, an amazing high-tech dance club called Ra, several relaxing bars, attractions and rides, a small shopping gallery, and escalators up to the Mandalay Place shopping mall.

Fun touches include the talking animatronic camels by the walkway to neighbouring Excalibur and a human size, remote control King Tut that moves around the attractions level talking to people and blasting "Walk Like an Egyptian".

There are a total of five pools at the rear of the hotel so you have a lot of choices but shade is at a premium. A luxurious spa offers all the niceties including massages, facials, sauna, steam, workout facilities, and more.

The prices remain relatively low - you can sometimes get in the place for as little as $35 although you'll usually wind up forking out at least $119 and sometimes double that on busy weekend nights (again, remember that date, 4th July).

As I said at the start of this review, it is not on a par with the MGM, Bellagio, Caesars or Manadalay Bay, but then again neither are the prices! I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

People complain about Vegas turning into a theme park, but there's no denying that the Luxor is a stunning achievement. And it's certainly a step up from Excalibur where I stayed...I'm very envious! Regards, Plissken

As the comment below says, when in Vegas, we didn't get a chance to go in here, but it did look fantastic from outside. I'd certainly consider staying here for that price but would probably be drawn back to the Aladdin. Steve :o)
