I had the pleasure to stay at the Luxorhotel in May 2005 while in Las Vegas for business reasons. One of the reasons I ended up at the Luxor was because the exhibition my company were showing at had prefered rates with this and several of the other large hotels on the strip. We ended up paying £80 a night which is great for the room I was allocated.
My experience of the hotel
I landed at McCarran International Airport at 4pm US time and jumped in a cab to the Luxor. Firstly if you havent been to LasVegas before you wont belive how near the airport is to the main centre of Las Vegas, it seemed from first landing that you could walk the distance to your hotel. As soon as you get outside the airport you realise a) the heat is overwhelming to begin with, it was 40 degrees when I was there and you wouldnt want to push a trolley to far, and b) Its a little further then it looks. The taxi driver I had obviously knew the Luxor well and took me there in around 10 minutes drive. The cab was inexpensive and including tip the journey was $15
On arriving at the hotel I was amazed at the structure I saw before me, the hotel is set back from the strip (las vegas boulevard) on lush grass which they must need to have a sprinkler on daily to maintain in that heat. There are several different eygptian themed statues dotted around the front of the hotel including one of Anubis as you enter the lobby (the god with the head of the dog I think) The front of the hotel was busy all the time with taxis arriving and departing, and I saw several limos too.
On entering the hotel you walk into a massive lobby, extremly high ceilings. At this point I think I should point out if you dont already know that the Luxor is one of the many themed hotels in Las Vegas and the main hotel is shaped like a pyramid,
a very large high pyramid. The hotel has now also got two 22 ft towers built either side of it. The hotel has in the pyramid 2,256 rooms with 236 Spa suites, two in each corner of every floor. Within the twin towers are 1,948 rooms with 237 suites.
So I was in the lobby gazing around me at the cavernous room in front of me, at this point I could see at least 10 check in points along a long front desk, a large fountain to the side of the room which was splashing away with yet more Eygptian themed decoration built in. I saw lots of people everywhere, staff and guests, fruit machines and a cashpoint and this was within just stepping inside the door. On looking up you could see the start of some of the rooms for hire in that main pyramid building, they went up and up into the ceiling right up to the point.
There was an escalator which went up to the food court and as I walked further inside and up to the front desk I saw the start of the enormous gambling area which I'll talk more about in a moment.
On presenting myself at check in I was spoken to by a very nice friendly receptionist who asked if I'd been to the Luxor before. As I hadnt they gave me a map (yes its surely needed!) to find my room on which they marked the location of my room and also backed this up with verbal instructions too. My credit card was swiped and I was given a pair of key cards which I was informed I could use for anything in the hotel.
Feeling very overwhelmed I made my way in the direction the clerk had pointed out taking everything in as I went. From the main lobby I followed the corridor round following signs for the North Tower where I was staying. I passed shops, a theatre at the time advertising The Blue Man Group show which has now come to London. I also could see although I didnt walk through at that time, the huge gambling area with loads of people busy gambling away. I carried on and passed an entrance leading out to the pool where I could see a lovely pool surrounded by what was meant to be reconstructions of the classic columns of antiquity. Then I came to the list area. They seem fairly security concious here as to opperate the lift you have to insert your key card. I stayed in the lift and got out on the 5th floor. It was lovely and cool in the halls and the marble floor and walls added to that feeling. I found my room after a few wrong turns and opened my door.
My room
The room was designed to look contemporary but with strong indications of the Eygption theme. The walls were a kind of dusky pink colour and there were several pictures of eygptian gods and pyramids.
I had two twin beds in the room, a large cupboard which the TV was inside of, air conditioning, hairdryer and iron. The room was onsuite with a lovely bath and seperate shower cubicle. They had provided various free toiletries for guest use.
The room was lovely and clean and tidy and cool. When I saw the room service menu I nearly fell off my bed. It was so long and detailed, suffice to say you could have anything you could imagine to eat and more besides.
Other information
Because I was here on business just for 4 nights I didnt really eat in the Luxor bar breakfast. Breakfast was held in the The Pharaoh's Pheast Buffet area which was on the basement level. You basically went and queued for a table and when one was free you'd be taken in, you paid up front or on your room, but one thing I found that irritated me slightly was because you were being served by so many differnt people you still had to remember to take money down to breakfast because you had to tip the waiting staff too. The buffet was self service and you could choose from a massive selection. Salad, fried items, eggs in about 15 different forms, fruit, about a million varieties of pastries, cereals, juices, gritts! I chose just bacon and eggs each day but for $12 you could just stay in there are long as you wanted and have whatever you wanted. Waitresses came around and supplied coffee and juice whenever you wanted.
As I say this was my only real meals at the Luxor but I did go into the food court area too and have macdonalds and pizza on a couple of occasions, I felt more comfortable doing that then having room service as it just felt more social. The junk food was very cheap and greasy the same as it is in the UK so I wont say anymore on that.
I had the great fortune of being taken out to dinner two nights while there at restaurants in the surrounding hotels and they were brilliant. I have to recommend CraftSteak at the MGM Grand as that was really something else. The service, the food everything was amazing there. Expensive but very good.
The Luxor itself has a massive selection of places to eat and several of them are very high end. Their website lists the award winning steak house which did look lovely but just wasnt approprriate for my needs during my stay. I wont go into all the food options as I cant review them first hand.
The pool was one of my greatest pleasures during my stay. After a hard day on an exhibition stand at the Mandaly Bay it was a total delight to come back to the Luxor, get into my swim gear and head out by the pool for a few hours of relaxation. Thats one of the best things about Las Vegas, although I was finishing at 4pm I could still go and get plenty of sun until at least 7pm (this was in May) the pool itself wasnt very deep but was quite big, there was enough room to swim a few leisurely lengths although at the time I was the only one doing this. The other people there were mainly drinking around the pool and sitting in rubber rings in the pool. The pool is overshadowed to one side with large classic colums as I may have mentioned and water came out of the tops at different times and sprayed into the pool below. It was lovely just to sit half in and half out of the pool relaxing. Towels were supplied for free when you produced your room key and sun loungers were available too.
I have to say I didnt do any gambling at the Luxor but any and all gambling you want to do could be done here. Armies of slot machines, roulette tables, sports bar area for gambling on games, poker anything you liked was all here. The waitresses will bring whatever you like over to you while you gamble too.
The Luxor was connected to the Mandaly Bay at one entrance via a mall and corridors. This was a big plus for me as it meant I didnt have to brave the strip in my suit on the way to the exhibition, in 40 degrees of heat any outside exposure not in few clothes wasnt pleasant. The mall was good and had a very nice bookshop which Im not sure if it was part of the Luxor or the Mandalay Bay but it was one or the other. Really nice lady in there and loads of good books to browse.
Im not sure exactly what else to tell you about the Luxor, except that I think its one of the most impressive hotels on the strip, it stands out a mile, particularly at night when it has a laser beam that comes up out of the pyramid and shines 2 miles into space apparently!
From what I can see of prices they change depending on the night. The cheapest you could get a deluxe room in one of the Towers was for $99 suites were from as low as $194 rising to $500, but from my experiene with the hotel it seems that you can get lower rates if you look in advance.
I'd recommend the Luxor to anyone who wants to stay somewhere impressive to look at, large, everything under one roof type thing, great pool and choice of foods.
However I would say on the negative side for me I prefer something a little smaller and more intimate, I didnt like having to carry cash around for breakfast, I would rather have it somewhere where you are either putting it on the room or its all inclusive, but I guess thats America with the tipping situation. Thats my only negative though.
I had a lovely 4 day stay and would return again, although hopefully for leisure next time.

I went there when I was younger, and your review brought it all flooding back. You've gotta pity the poor sod who gets a room on the top floor, though.

Advantages: An unmistakable icon on the Strip, distinctive and with no shortage of class. Exceptional price for exceptional quality of room, service and attraction. Caters for all ages, groups and functional needs. One of the best. Disadvantages: Watch the queues and price increase around American holidays but at all other times it is a supremely priced hotel.
Advantages: Central Location, loads going on for both children and adults, if you shop around you can get a great deal Disadvantages: We did initially get put in a smoking room when we'd requested non smoking but that was soon resolved to our satisfaction and with no fuss
