This was not a hotel I had any choice in, as we accompanied friends who had just got married - I initially thought Vegas and 6 friends a strange combination for a honeymoon, but we're all different!!!

However, I had just about the best holiday I have had in years at this wonderful hotel!

In a nutshell, for those who do not wish to read all the review :-

• Fantastic setting on the strip but away from main hustle and bustle and crowds
• Excellent gambling with friendly staff - good payouts, lessons, friendly and fun atmosphere. Lots of encouragement given to enjoy yourself!
• Good loyalty card for casino
• Good range of eateries - restaurants and food court
• IMAX cinema, Egyptian museum, 5 pools (seasonal opening but at least one always open) Spa facilities, Hair saloon, gym
• Very clean, (despite smoking allowed everywhere in Vegas!!!)
• Decorated to a high standard, attention to detail but not over the top
• Very, very helpful and friendly staff - from cleaners to concierge services
• Linked to Mandalay Bay (Shark Reef) and Excalibur (Kiddie friendly) resort hotels
• Variety of shops, some open 24 hours

It started with an innocent request for the cost of an upgrade. I had seen on the internet that you could get Spa Suites, located in the tower block. However, the cost for these was £3000 for ten nights on the cheapest hotel web site, which does not always offer all the rooms available.

So I thought I would ask about upgrades in general.

The very helpful check-in clerk presented me and hubby with a booklet detailing all the rooms and asked which one we would like.

I naturally choose the Spa Suite with full submersion bath, walk-in shower and floor to ceiling windows with view of the strip.

After having disappeared for a few minutes - which gave me time to convince hubby we really could afford another $100 per night for the chance of this pampered luxury - very helpful man came back and offered us the room for $50 per night!!! Less than £35 per night!!

We worked out that we had just made a saving of over $2000 on this Spa Suite just by asking at front desk on arrival.

The Suite itself was amazing - you entered into a hallway with a living area directly in front. It had the softest sofa with an elegant coffee table, complete with flowers creatively arranged.

The lighting was subdued but bright enough to read the myriad of magazines inviting you to partake in Vegas delights and amusements that the hotel had laid out.

The bedroom was through the door, with again, floor to ceiling windows overlooking part of the strip. The bed was 8 foot by 8 foot, with soft pillows in abundance.

The bathroom was unbelievable - you walk in to a double vanity unit, encased in marble with mirrors all around.

As you move up, to the left was the bath tub - steps led up to the side, with towels folded into designs, and soaps and other bathing items arranged delicately yet tastefully around the edge.

The walk in shower was big enough for a family of four to sit down in comfortably.

Best of all? - they had proper sized bath sheets that were soft and fluffy!!!

I have upgraded rooms before to so called 'suites' but this hotel beat them all hands down!!!

The decor was fantastic, all muted shades with accessories designed to enhance the subtle shading.

The staff at this hotel are lovely - some of the friendliest I have had the pleasure of staying with.

Ok, so the cynical of you might say, 'well, it is Vegas, they want your money!' To be honest, not my viewpoint at all.

Not once was I cojourned into the casino. Not once did I have hard sell by the ticket masters patrolling the downstairs. All were very polite and waited for you to catch their eye before they approached.

Most importantly, all had knowledge of the area, hotels, shows and best places to eat.

However, one bit of advice - DO NOT go to Vegas without reading up on it!! It has masses of things to do, not just gambling.

Whilst I had read extensively on trips/shows to do, I found it really helpful to talk with the concierge at the Luxor. Whether it was because I knew roughly what we wanted to see/do or not, he was incredibly helpful and answered all our questions in what I felt was an honest manner.

Now onto the casino!!

This is set in the bottom of the pyramid, with the pyramid rooms going up around you.

It is loud, it is noisy but my god it is fun!!!

People we got talking to whilst out and about often said they played at the Luxor, just for the atmosphere. I have to agree with them.

Part of the trip was spent visiting over 30 other hotels both on and off the strip, and we spent some time in other casinos.

Sorry to say, but the croupiers just are not as friendly as Luxor's.

Yes, yes, yes, I can hear the cynics out there yet again saying 'they only want your money!!' - so what? If they can be nice and friendly at the same time, when I went to Vegas KNOWING I would be gambling at least some of the time, then it makes the whole process even more enjoyable!!!

Do sign up for the loyalty card when you arrive. TIP - if you play poker, make sure they swipe your card when you start and finish playing or you will not get your points!! I played on average one hour when we came in for the night, usually around 3am in the morning. By the end of ten days, I had a souvenir of a t-shirt plus money off my final hotel bill. Would have had more had hubby done my above tip, hence why I have included it!!!

They do classes for the complete novice or person who wants to brush up their 'skills' - good fun to do!

There seemed to be lots of people winning, and this casino encourages patrons to be as loud and as excitable as they wish when they when - it all makes for the atmosphere!!

The food court is value for money but nothing really interesting to thrill the taste buds - standard fast food really.

However, the restaurant - Pharaoh's Buffet - is amazing for the array of food and exceptionally good value. You can go up as many times as you like and whenever we ate there, we had a choice of at least 10 - 15 different main courses and desserts.

The pools are great - we went out of season so only three were open. They are warm and functional, the pool staff friendly and efficient. A bonus was it was not overlooked!!

The setting of the Luxor is at the top end of the strip. This is an advantage as far as I was concerned, because you are away fomr the noise of the strip, but close enough to step outside the hotel and be on the strip!!

It is a massive complex - MGM is the only other hotel bigger than Luxor - so be prepared to walk some distance between things, particularly if staying in either of the Towers.

Also, do invest in paying that extra for a Tower room as opposed to a pyramid room, which whilst in the pyramid, are small and right on the noise!!! (Upgrade if you can!!!)

Like all Vegas hotels, busy times are from Thursday - Sat. Gambling prices rise from $2 min bet to $5 - 10 min bet so do watch out for that. (TIP - gamble at downtown over weekend)

Luxor is connected to other hotels - Mandalay Bay and Excalibur via tunnels or walkways. Both these hotels have things to do. Mandalay Bay has Shark Reef and Excalibur is great for kids stuff as well as having an excellent Chocolate Shop.

Luxor has a shop that is open 24 hours, on the casino level. It sells convenience stuff, food, drinks. Other shops are located at various places, but apart form the bath shop, near the Excalibur entrance, I did not visit them, so I am afraid I cannot comment on the shopping experience at Luxor!!!

Room Service is available 24 hours, and like all other hotels in Vegas, you will not see a clock anywhere, so wear a watch.

A final tip would be - watch the air con!!! It can be a little chilly of an evening in Vegas out of season, and the hotels crank up the air con to keep gamblers awake in the wee small hours!!!!

I had a fantastic time here, as did all our friends who were with us. I will most certainly stay here again when i revisit to do all the stuff I was not able to fit in!!!!

Great review... I went to Vegas last year for the 1st time and had the time of my life. I'm planning another trip later in the year and will definately make some enquiries into this hotel.
