Lycabetus Hill (Athens)

Lycabetus Hill is one of the main hills surrounding Athens city centre. If you have allowed yourself some time to see Athens and are not immediately sailing off to an island (unfortunately, many people skip the city altogether), I can highly recommend catching a concert here. Perhaps surprisingly for some people, a lot of big names have played here in the last few months and years including Moby, Duran Duran, Pink Floyd. Why do they come? Because ...

If you have allowed yourself some time to see Athens and are not immediately sailing off to an island (unfortunately, many people skip the city altogether), I can highly recommend catching a concert here. Perhaps surprisingly for some people, a lot of big names have played here in the last few months and years including Moby, Duran Duran, Pink Floyd. Why do they come? Because it is simply a fantastic venue out in the open air. The seating is arranged in a sort of Greek semi-circular ampitheatre, using a large metal structure, bolted together. The cheapest seats are in the back, but don't be afraid to go for these because the view is breathtaking - not only do you get a great view of the performance, but you also get fantastic views over Athens by night. There are drinks and snack on offer, but why not take along your own chilled bottle of wine and a few glasses, sit back and relax. In addition to famous bands "western" bands you can also have the opportunity of seeing tradtional Greek music being played, such as "rembetika" for example. It's a real treat to see bold Greeks get up from the audience and do (or attempt to do!) traditional dancing in front of where the band is playing. If you can pluck up the courage, you are free to join them! As for getting to Lycabetus, there's a furnicular going up which costs about 7 Euros for a return journey, you can drive, or you can take a winding walk up to the summit. The furnicular start in the rather posh Kolonaki neighbourhood. You might want to pop into one of the nice cafes in the area for some Dutch courage ahead of your climb to the top of the hill.
