Lovely Lyme Regis

Advantages: Charming. Lovely atmosphere. Great views.
Disadvantages: Car parking is difficult in the summer months

...visit just has to be Lyme Regis. This little gem of a place is an absolute delight for sore eyes and it comes as no surprise to me that the great American actress Meryl Streep, after filming there, fell in love with the place.
The resort has some delightful buildings, the cob, and some excellent hotels, guest houses and bed and breakfast places. The town also has a number of tradtional English inns which have foreigners drooling and there are ...
...just oozes character. It is very hilly which could make it difficult for the elderly to get about the place and in the height of the season car parking can be difficult. These small blemishes aside Lyme Regis is a wonderful place to spend an idyllic weekend at !

Superb resort!

Advantages: unspoilt
Disadvantages: it's along way from where I live!

Lyme Regis was a complete surprise to me. I'd never been to that part of Dorset before and it was nice driving through the pretty-as-a-postcard villages to get there. On arriving at Lyme Regis I was immediatly struck by how unspoilt it was. There was no ultra modern concrete-and-glass office complexes, no industrial estates, and no ugly multi-storey carparks (unfortunately Warwick and Stratford both suffer from all these). Instead everything olde ...
...hats and cheap souvenirs???...forget it. Lyme Regis has a host of small individual retailers who have decided not to go down the cheap-trash route. Instead there are craft shops, second hand booksellers, fossil shops etc etc. Lyme Regis has done what a lot more tourist haunts should do...and that is reflect the local area. The area is famous for fossils, seafish and Thomas Hardy amongst other things, so rather than just being another could-be-anywhere ...

Dorset,A Greatly Underated County

Advantages: Unspoilt. Traditional. A Microcosm of England. Compact
Disadvantages: Very few.

Dorset is I think one of the greatly under-rated counties of England. A lot of people going to the South West for their holidays target Devon and Cornwall - and both are delightful-but at best hurry through Dorset. Yet this county has a great deal to offer the visitor ranging from typically English, rustic, villages, to the sophistication of Bournemouth, the elegance of Poole, the delights of Georgian Weymouth, the beauty of the coastline and the joys of small towns such as Bridport, Dorchester and Lyme Regis. It is not only very compact but in many ways an almost perfect microcosm of England. Literary buffs will find Dorset is no backwater for this is Hardy country and it was the home for part of his life of T.E.Lawrence.Dorset also has its place in agrarian history as the Tolpuddle Martyrs serve to remind us. Celebrities are ...

Dinosaurland in Dorset

Advantages: Preserving a Phenomena. Tourism. International Recognition
Disadvantages: None

What a Century! ******************* In 1821 Mary Anning discovered the first complete ichthyosaurus while wading and searching for fossils under the dangerous, crumbling cliffs in her home town of Lyme Regis in West Dorset, on the coast of South West England. What would this proud, uneducated working class woman think of the latest news? In 1834, the six men now known as The Tolpuddle Martyrs, the founders of the Trade Union movement, were found guilty of Mutiny in the County Court of Dorchester, the County town of Dorset, and sentenced to seven years transportation to Australia. What would these Dorset farm labourers who altered the social structure in England, think of the latest news? In 1840 Thomas Hardy the Dorset author was born, yet to write his world famous classical literature to include ‘Far From the Madding ...
