In summer 2006 i visited Norway with my car. We went to the northest point and therefore i can write a few lines about nice alps - not alps from central europe but alps from Norway.
These are close to biggest city above the polar circle called Tromso. As I said it is behind polar circle and therefore in summer the sun there never goes down - there is no sunset for months. This makes climbing mountains verz interesting there because you dont need to hurry to be down before sunset:)
We have driven to the village that is on the seaside in front of alps and there i bought a map. It was weird map because there were mountains on it without any path longer than 3km so i decided that we have to go without any road. The highest mountain is 1833 meters high and i have chosen Daltingen - mountain that was close to seaside and has more than 1500 meters.
Forget about thinking how a 1500 meters high mountains look like in central Europe - there is about 8 degrees at night and 9 degrees at day so the mountains are like as alps starting 2000 to 3500 meters. Glacier in the valley under Daltingen was about 300 meters above the sea level!
So we started walking in the glacier valley north of the Daltingen - it was sunny and the nature was outstanding!! Then when it seemed that we are behind cliffs i turned our way towards the top of Daltingen. There were large stones above valley not easy to jump from one to another all the time but i liked it because I like hiking without any path.
After grass peak where we took lunch it started to be more straight up and there was nothing alive in 1000 meters above the sea level. Wind started to blow hard and clouds were becoming a bit darker. We were continuing to get to the top along very big snow field.
When we reached the top of the mountain there was snow nearly everywhere and it started raining and snowing together so wi didnt saw anything, but i really enjoyed winter in summertime:)
The way down was really fast because first 500 meters above the sea level we made in 5 minutes downhill skiing on a snow field - it was straight enough to ski on our hiking boots! Very funny:D
I recommend this adventure to anybody who likes abandoned nature with snow and glacier all around - you will surely be alone there!

Sounds great - I've not been here, but have walked in the north of Sweden and can relate to what you say about not judging by the height above sea level.
