MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas

Advantages: A fascinating place to visit and so much to see
Disadvantages: One can get worn out just trying to explore the whole hotel

I stayed at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for 3 nights and 4 days in August 2008 and can honestly say I had a great time. Please let me warn you that this is a fairly lengthy review of my experience. We got a taxi from the airport to the hotel which cost about $7 which works out at less than £4. The first thing you notice about stepping out of the taxi and into the hotel is the fabulous air-conditioning. Vegas in August is VERY hot, well over 40o Centigrade! ...

On stepping inside the hotel (if you arrive by car) you are greeted by the large gold lion in the centre of the lobby in front of which it seems everyone who goes there for the first time rushes to have their photo taken in front of! Disadvantages: Located at the southern end of "The Strip" - so a bit of a walk to some attractions...

We stayed at the MASSIVE MGM Grand for a few days this time last year. The MGM Grand, guarded by a 45-foot-tall bronze lion statue has 5,005 rooms and used to be the largest hotel in the world, a claim recently stolen by the Ambassador City Jomtien hotel in Thailand with 5,100 rooms. The MGM Grand is part of the MGM Mirage group, that also owns, among others, The Bellagio, The Mirage, Treasure Island, New York-New York (just across the street) and Beau Rivage hotels/casinos in Vegas. ...Las Vegas and chose the MGM hotel to stay at so this forms my review. The MGM is located right on the strip (Las Vegas Boulevard) right by Tropicana Avenue so fairly near one end of the strip. It is located close to the New York New York hotel and there is actually a walkway which joins the two hotels to give you easy access to both. ...Paris, The Venetian etc. The MGM in my opinion is not as heavily themed as the other hotels but follows along the lines of old Hollywood/California movies stars etc with the feature of the MGM lion and movie star photos in the bedrooms. When the MGM first opened it had a Wizard of Oz theme, the green outside meant to look like the Emerald city and various attractions in this mould. Advantages: Superb Facilities, Excellent Price, Lions on show!
Disadvantages: None.

The MGM Grand is officially the second largest hotel in the world and offers superb facilitied, excellent sized rooms with superb levels of cleanliness and very helpful staff. Advantages: An unmistakable icon on the Strip, distinctive and with no shortage of class. Exceptional price for exceptional quality of room, service and attraction. Caters for all ages, groups and functional needs. One of the best.
Disadvantages: Watch the queues and price increase around American holidays but at all other times it is a supremely priced hotel.

...To be honest, when ‘The Luxor’ first opened in 1992 I was in Las Vegas at the time staying at the ‘Mirage’ and as a boy in my late teens I thought it looked a little bit tacky and uninspiring. It may have had something to do with the fact that I was staying in one of the higher echelon hotels on the strip and was surrounded by other sensational hotels such as ‘Caesars’ and the ‘MGM Grand’. It lacked that bit of aura, that mystique that comes with a Las Vegas Casino and Hotel complex. The idea was pretty cool: build a 30-story black pyramid in the middle of the desert and put in hotel rooms and a casino with an Egyptian theme, but it just didn’t have the feel or look of something to rival the big Casino’s.
