Hi - I am a 41 year old mother of two children (13 and 10) and have a partner, Phil, who I adore. I am looking forward to being a part of Ciao and meeting some new friends.

I have read the other (beautifully written and informative) ops on Milton Keynes Shopping Centre - and I think there must be something wrong with me. I can't stand the place. I live in nearby Buckingham and probably venture into Milton Keynes once every couple of months - less if I can possibly avoid it. The drive into Milton Keynes is uninspiring. Roundabout after roundabout begins the illusion of being on a treadmill. Parking is not too bad, easily available (less so at weekends) and not too badly priced. But then we are faced with the shops. Shopping in Milton Keynes hurts. The floors are somehow harder than anywhere else and after 10 minutes the headache kicks in. A new Centre has just been completed which has only served to double my misery. It is a copy of the first one. Every time I go to MK, I vow that this time I will enjoy it, but within half an hour, I am heading for the first of many coffees. Here, I am well catered for, with lots of places to choose from (including Starbucks). Since they banned my filthy habit of smoking in the Shopping Centre, many coffee shops now have smoking areas - so they have done me a favour. If all I wanted to do was find a nice, sunny window seat and watch the World go by, fuelled by endless tall lates and cigs, then MK would be almost a pleasant place. But, gentle reader, I am here to shop. The High Street names are well represented here - but they all seem to be copies of one another. If you decided to do price comparisons (as I did once, on my daughter's winter coat) you could well find yourself at the end of an exhausting day, back at the first shop you started in. Milton Keynes has no soul. It has an air of materialism that pervades the recycled air. The shop assistants look about ready to topple over with the sheer tedium of their lives. You might feel more at home if you had a barcode tattoed on your forehead. To make this a more balanced account, I must admit that I love the new Theatre. It has ample parking, is well laid out and has brilliant accoustics. So that's one point for MK, oh, and did I mention the Coffee Shops.......????

Your comments about the shop assistants made me laugh. I live in Milton Keynes, but try not to go to the shopping centre at the weekends - utter mayhem. It is great for Christmas shopping, but useless for anything 'different' I find myself craving for small, tacky shops. Still when I lived in Hastings where they are all small and tacky, I craved for something as comprehensive as Milton Keynes. You can't win!

Must be better than where i live for shopping. It's only a tiny town with one clothes shop.

I was there only yesterday. It's better than Northampton where I live. My biggest problem with MK is all the little skateboarders everywhere.....Maeib

Advantages: Wide range of shops and plenty of space to escape into! Disadvantages: coffee shops/ sandwich bars do become rather packed when the centre is busy
