When picking a place to eat then hygiene is obviously a big factor, for one you wouldn't eat next to a sewer or a toilet even. Well the Ma Bo is a disgrace to all Chinese restuarants. Situated in Liverpools Chinatown at the top end of Nelson Street this so called restuarant resembles nothing more than a simple soup kitchen. I'll explain why I think the Ma Bo is so revolting and horrible. As a restuarant I find their choice very very limited, at most five dishes are their only offerings.
First impressions of the shoddy place are very off putting, to enter the establishment you have to make your way up some very worn out dangerous looking concrete steps. To make things worse you can see the little food preparing bit by looking in the window, whats really disgusting is the fact that the meat they hang seems to touch the windows! This is a very big health hazard. Also flies can sometimes be seen to buzz around the meats, after the flies and any other insects are done with the char sui and roast duck my appetite has already disappeared, and thats before entering the place!
Upon entry things don't get much better, I noticed that the tiled floor resembled more of a dodgy road that was in desperate need of repair. The tables and chairs looked old and shoddy, very unstable as well. This made me wonder even more of the hygiene of the place, this made my mind race into different thoughts, maybe they don't even wash their dishes at all!
When it was time to order then I found the staff with very little english grammar knowlegde, good job I know cantonese then. I had a simple wanton noodle with soup base. As mentioned before about the food preparation bit, its not very nice to see them making your food as it makes you feel sick. The food just about was below average as the food did not taste fresh, well guess you get what you pay for.
You can safely say that I won't be in a hurry to eat there in the near future, instead I recommend the New Capital Restuarant, The Far East Restuarant or The Recently opened buffet, karaoke and disco China Palace, these forementioned places are a billion times better than the little soup kitchen that is the Ma Bo. How in the hell can they call themselves a restuarant when they don't even serve Dim Sum! Hmmm, just hope hygeine officers make a little visit to them sooner rather than later, simply unfit for human consumption giving Chinese food a bad name.
Advantages: Inexpensive, friendly staff, excellent character Disadvantages: It shuts pretty early!
The Ma Bo, yes is a little rough around the edges. I agree, its initial appearence is qustionable. The food however is outstandng, as is the friendliness of the staff, and the atmosphere of the place. I was lucky enough to be taken to the Ma Bo from the age of about 7/8 and now 25 enjoy taking my own little one for a meal to this day. About my little one, she is 3 years old, loves her chinese food, adores Ma Bo, and I can promise you if the place ... ...miss all the other dishes Ma Bo offer. The food. It is by far the best chinese food you will eat within Liverpool. It is in fact the best I have tried anywhere. Try the Char Sui. It is amazing. Another point to make is the other customers. A lot of the time, chinese people are eating as customers. This I believe in itself is a recomendation of the food the Ma Bo serves.
For a No Frills restaurant, made up for in every way by its food, the Ma Bo ...
