Decided to have some "staycation" breaks this year with my wife, and selected the Macdonald Portal for 3 nights. Got a good deal at around £400 for DB&B. Hotel is in a very quiet location near Tarporley village. Plenty of car parking but entrance is not impressive, or even easily found. Reception process friendly and efficient. Our booking request for a "country view" was quickly noted and our room switched to a very comfortable (and larger) one at no additional cost. Room was very well equipped and quiet. Leisure facilities excellent with very large pool of constant depth throughout. Steam/sauna etc were also available. Breakfast was excellent, with buffet cold selection and made-to-order hot selection. Restaurant menu for dinner was surprisingly "plain" and more like that for a golf bar. The reason was soon obvious when a table of some 20 golfers arrived. Not a great problem but not coducive to a "fine dining" experience. Later, the bar was similarly dominated by large golf parties and it was difficult to get a drink. We found a similar situation on all 3 nights, and were surprised that a separate leisure bar/restaurant was not provided e.g. like the Claret Jug in DeVere Hotels. Hotel was very convenient for main routes, and we enjoyed some great trips in Cheshire and North Wales. Overall, a good experience but the slight difficulties in the evenings meant that is was not a "special" experience.
Advantages: Clean spacious & new Disadvantages: A bit sterile and spa not up to scratch
I stayed here for two nights in July 08. The hotel was new (it had only been open a few months). I live locally but stayed here for a wedding. There was plenty of parking available and an undercover walk way to the reception area (It was raining so very much apprieciated!)
We had a block booking (6 rooms), on arrival all the bookings were as they should have been and check in was easy. We were allocated a room on the ground floor. The view was of ... ...for the view! The room had everything you needed Hair dryer, kettle with tea and coffee, iron and ironing board. There was plenty of space a large comfy double bed table with two chair and a table. Also dressing table and mirror and also good lighting (for make-up purposes!!). Room service was a bit on the slow side but nothing to really complain about and the bar area clean but a bit on the sterile side. We used the Spa facilities which offered ...
