Myself and my boyfriend stayed at this hotel in April this year and we were very happy with our stay. The staff were friendly from the moment we stepped through the doors and the hotel itself is not only in a perfect location for seeing the city, but is also lovely in a very old school way. This is not a moder hotel and you will see a lot of plush red carpets and oak furnishings.
We stayed for two nights, ordering breakfast on both mornings and dining in the 2 rossetta awarded restaurant on the first evening at a cost of £260 for the first night and £210 for the second. For what it was breakfast was quite pricey (be aware that there is a £7 tray charge for room service) and we weren't given much. A full english breakfast consisted of one flat mushroom, one small sausage and slice of bacon and a tomato. There was an awful lot of plate to be seen. However, the selection itself is pretty good and you can order anything from kippers to museli. We were also a little disappointed with the evening meal as it wasn't what we had hoped for and we found the food quite bland - although the service cannot be faulted. My advice is to eat outside and the staff will be more than happy to give directions to a good restaurant. At least they were in our case and on the second night gave us directions to a very good thai.
The rooms are well appointed with a good toiletry selection and the bathroom lovely. We stayed in an executive suite and although it was a bit of a trek to get to our room, it was nice to feel a little bit out of the way of the main hotel area. You should ask before booking though whether you'll be placed in the main hotel or the newer extension area. Whilst the room was very nicely decorated, with a huge bed and sofa, we were disappointed by the large damp stain by one of the walls. Also the undersheet on our bed was torn, but when we notified house keeping they changed the sheets straightaway and left us a little box of chocolates and a hand written apology which was a lovely touch. We didn't bother complaining about the stain.
The concierge service is also very good and the hotel can provide an array of items that you may have forgotten. They happily provided me with a few extra items i had neglected to bring.
This is undoubtedly an expensive hotel and all the trimmings will cost you, however for a romantic getaway it was lovely and Oxford is a beautiful city. The staff were friendly and helpful and i would love to go back one day - maybe when i've saved up a bit first!
I would recommend this hotel to those of you who want an luxurious break away.
