For a start, they can't convey the 360° sweep of the panorama in all directions, the sense of being at the centre of a vast landscape of breath-taking majesty. Machu Picchu is one of the world's most famous historic monuments, a World Heritage Site and recently acclaimed by popular vote as one of seven "New Wonders of the World", in the company of such places as the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal. Despite its remote location high in the Peruvian Andes, it attracts nearly half a million visitors a year and their presence takes its inevitable toll both on the ... more

Machu Picchu - One of the New Seven Wonders

Advantages: One of the 'Must see before you die' sights
Disadvantages: expensive to get there from UK

Machu Picchu : If you were asked to write a list of places you MUST see in the world I believe this would be on most people's list. It was certainly on my list; it is a destination of a lifetime, a dream come true and one of the most fascinating archaeological finds of recent times. Everyone interested in travel recognises the picture postcard view but nothing prepares you for your own first sight of Machu Picchu when you see it for yourself the ...
...had buried the city of Machu Picchu until Hiram Bingham, assisted by local villagers from the area, uncovered it the ruins in 1911. This cover of vegetation has meant that we are able to enjoy Machu Picchu as it is today, a fairly well preserved Inca city. Machu Picchu means 'Old Peak' and the city was built on this mountain between 1460 and 1470 AD by Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui. It seems a strange place to build a city because of its altitude of 8,000ft ...

Belize Barrier Reef "A World Heritage Site"

Advantages: Second largest mass of living coral in the World!
Disadvantages: For divers only

?Deterioration or disappearance of any item of the cultural or natural heritage constitutes a harmful impoverishment of the heritage of all the nations of the world. It is incumbent on the international community as a whole to participate in the protection of the cultural and natural heritage of outstanding universal?. ? quoted from UNESCO?S World Heritage Convention. In keeping with the above words, the Belize Barrier-Reef Reserve System was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1966. It was thus accorded the same status as Machu Picchu in Peru, the Grand Canyon in the United States and other such wonders around the world. So what makes this site of ?Universal Value?? ******************************* A Heritage Worth Preserving ******************************* The Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest mass of living ...

Review of General: Belize

The discreet charm of the Casa San Blas

Advantages: A five-star stay?
Disadvantages: ?with just three-star facilities

. I started off this review by talking about that "indefinable essence known as character or personality". Of course, they're not exactly the same thing, but the Casa San Blas has both, and more importantly still, the right attitude. Given that it's splendidly situated and not exorbitantly expensive, I'd recommend it to anyone planning to stay in Cusco. And I'd recommend a stay in Cusco to anyone and everyone. © torr 2008 A review of an excellent, albeit expensive, place to stay when seeing Machu Picchu may be found at: http://travel.ciao.co.uk/InkaterraPuebloHotelMachuPicchuReview5 731324 A review of Machu Picchu itself may be found at: http://travel.ciao.co.uk/MachuPicchuPeruReview5734092 ...

Review of Casa San Blas, Cusco

A priceless experience

Advantages: Possibly the best hotel I've ever stayed in
Disadvantages: Possibly the most expensive too

the Pueblo, by which name it is still known locally as well as in many guidebooks and hotel-booking websites. In case that's not enough confusion for you, the Urubamba River is known as the Vilcanota where it flows past Machu Picchu (and the Wilcamayu elsewhere in the sacred valley), but it's the Urubamba for most of its length and for that reason here too.
