I wanted a flight to Melbourne from there, and there's a new airline called Tiger Airways in Australia which was doing special offers for flights from Mackay to Melbourne in April when i was there, they may still be doing the special offer because they are trying to promote their airline because it's very new. Advantages: variety of attractions, nice area, weathers good Disadvantages: you got to fly to Australia which takes a whole day at least.
.... Train services aren't the best there, but you don't need it with the amount of airports they have. I would definately reccomend flying around Queensland rather than going by train or car. I used Brisbane, Cairns and Mackayairports there and thought that this was a very easy and more cost effective way of getting to the places I was visiting. I could have also used several other airports necause they have so many for example, Townsville is an international airport and one of the main ones in Queensland but I didn't use it.
Finally, I would just like to recommend visiting Queensland if you ever go to Australia as there are so many things to do and see, you will never be able to do everything so you have to have an idea of what you want to before you get there....
