One of the Finest Hotels in the World
Advantages: One of the Finest Hotels in the World Disadvantages: Coming home
...capital city, set into the cliff face. Perched high on the cliff, the hotel offers superb panoramic views of the atlantic and the city and it's port. Swaying palm trees surround lagoon-style pools and are complemented by the extrodinary service the staff offer. There is a special feel about the hotel, made possible by its juxtaposition of modern facilities with traditional design and subtle architecture. Gastronomically, the hotel offers three fabulous ...

It truly is Eden in Madeira!
Advantages: Lots - good food, nice rooms, nice staff Disadvantages: Beware of people reserving sun loungers with their towels!
I first stayed at the Eden Mar hotel in Madeira in 2007, and liked it so much I went back again for another week in 2008!
It is one of a group of hotels owned by the Porto Mare group, and is actually joint on to the Porto Mare hotel and The Reisidence, so you are also able to make use of their failities too.
The staff are delightful - friendly, helpful and always eager to please. Whatever request you have, they spring into action and nothing is ... ...of the Eden Mar is that the accommodation is in suites rather than just rooms, with a small kitchenette with fridge, hob etc behind a folding door. This suited us perfectly as we dont like to eat out every night, and also meant we could keep drinks, milk for tea etc cold in our room.
There are a few different indoor and outdoor pools between the hotels, catering for everybody. We particularly liked the pool which ajoined the spa, as the inside part ...

Enjoy a stay in the Manor of the White House
Advantages: Excellent service, nice quite location Disadvantages: No lifts or ramp for those with walking difficulties
...very nice little hotel called Quinta da Casa Branca. It is part of the Estalagem hotel chain and is included on a list of small luxury hotels of the world. Our travel agent Expedia had this hotel down as four stars so we were surprised when we turned up to see that the hotel had five stars on the gate. So who was right Expedia or Estalagem?
~Location~
Madeira is off the coast of West Africa, it is an steep sided granite mass sat out in the Atlantic ... ...bay on the southern coast. Quinta da Casa Branca (QCB) is located in the relatively quiet holiday apartment area of Casa Branca. QCB is north of the main hotels along the cliffs and west of Funchal's city centre. The hotel is on a crescent shaped parcel of land with an entrance gate in the northwest corner on Rue da Casa Branca. ~First impressions~
From the gate you can only see the hotel's reception area and bar all clad in glass, wood and dark ...

Pestana Grand Hotel - Funchal, Madeira.
Advantages: Good rooms, helpful staff, free bus into town Disadvantages: Its a bus ride from town.
...decided to go for the Pestana Grand hotel. The hotel was rated as a 5 star by our agent although this site rightly has it as a four-star. We booked on a bed & breakfast basis and with flights and transfers It cost us about £650 each for the week .
On arrival the reception staff were very helpful and spoke excellent English. We had been booked into a mountain view room and asked if we could upgrade to a sea view. This was no problem for, I think, ... ...a bit grotty. Pestana have a number of hotels around Funchal. The first Pestana hotel that we stopped at in the airport coach looked like it was in the middle of nowhere and I think was the budget option so be careful when booking.
the vast majority of the people staying at the hotel were 50 plus, mainly retired folk I think. We only saw a couple of families there. I dont think Madeira is a great place for family holidays due to the lack of beaches.

Madeira hotel with character
Advantages: Appearance, character, central location Disadvantages: up a steep hill
We had an enjoyable stay at this hotel.
What sold the hotel to us was its look. It has a traditional colonial appearance; a Madeira building that guests must have stayed at a 100 years ago. It has its own unique character and is such a contrast to all the big modern concrete blocks of hotels set along the coast. It may not be luxurious but it more than makes up with charm and grace of a bygone era.
Location
The hotel is situated in Funchal, the ... ...is located in the outskirts of the town so the transfer time here is short. The hotel is situated close to the centre of Funchal. However, it is positioned up a steep hill without public transport. As such it offers magnificent views over the town, the sea and the mountains. If you have children or you are not very mobile, however, it would be totally unsuitable. The hotel does run a minibus to and from the centre but not frequent enough to be of ...
