Dorisol Mimosa Hotel, Funchal
Review of Dorisol Mimosa, Funchal by Cebolas

Advantages: Comfortable, clean hotel with lots of facilities close to Funchal Lido
Disadvantages: A pull uphill to the door - but it is Madeira - everything is uphill!

Bearing in mind the price of this hotel, we were agreeably surprised by the quality. The room was clean and of a reasonable size with a lovely sea view and overlooking the swimming pool. The staff were friendly, especially the chambermaids! The breakfast was good, with a good selection of food, although being self-service it was a bit of a scramble if you arrived at around 9am, when we all seem to want to eat our breakfasts! The only problem is ...
...road (as is most of Madeira) although those with cars or using taxis will have no problem arriving at the door. The walk into Funchal is very manageable by us two 69 year olds but we are fitter than some and enjoy levada walking. The levada near the hotel has 150 steps up to it! ... Read review

A little bit of heaven
Review of Oasis Atlantic, Madeira by grafter123

Advantages: Clean ,near the sea ,good facilities, friendly staff, excellent maid service
Disadvantages: Off the beaten track a bit ,no beach just rocks, cabaret poor

...so we fit perfectly. The Oasis Atlantic hotel is not too far from the airport as the main road is very good. Although it is classed as in Canico , Canico is actually a village quite a way , away . It is an uphill walk all the way from the Oasis Atlantic Hotel and , although within reach , is not for the faint hearted . The easy option bus is right outside the hotel anyway . There is a bus shelter with a timetable . Fuller timetables an be picked ...
...The Oasis Atlantic has 224 rooms spread over 5 floors, I think , including a lower level . Most of the rooms have sea views whether you pay for them or not, but some are side views . The lower level ones won't have a sea view but either a pool or gardens view .You can stay on room only , B and B , half / full board or self catering basis .You can buy vouchers on arrival to change your meal status to half board for example . Some visitors , there ... Read review

Pestana Grand Hotel - Funchal, Madeira.
Review of Pestana Grand Hotel, Funchal by zoetna

Advantages: Good rooms, helpful staff, free bus into town
Disadvantages: Its a bus ride from town.

...decided to go for the Pestana Grand hotel. The hotel was rated as a 5 star by our agent although this site rightly has it as a four-star. We booked on a bed & breakfast basis and with flights and transfers It cost us about £650 each for the week . On arrival the reception staff were very helpful and spoke excellent English. We had been booked into a mountain view room and asked if we could upgrade to a sea view. This was no problem for, I think, ...
...a bit grotty. Pestana have a number of hotels around Funchal. The first Pestana hotel that we stopped at in the airport coach looked like it was in the middle of nowhere and I think was the budget option so be careful when booking. the vast majority of the people staying at the hotel were 50 plus, mainly retired folk I think. We only saw a couple of families there. I dont think Madeira is a great place for family holidays due to the lack of beaches. ... Read review

Hotel in quiet yet accessible area.
Review of Porto Santa Maria Hotel, Funchal by CHAOS1979

Advantages: Easy access to all activities and public transport.
Disadvantages: Probably quite expensive!

This is a beautiful hotel situated right at the end of the main promanade in Funchal. The views across the ocean, and into the city are perfect, with the sun setting over golden cliffs to the west in the evening towards the harbour. The hotel is situated right by the cable car and taxi rank, with the city centre on your door step, yet it is not a busy area, with very little noise. I have sat by the hotel reading a book in the shade many a time, enjoying ...
...I attended a party at this hotel, a wedding, and it really is outstanding inside, although unfortunately, I didnt get a chance to see any of the rooms. But knowing the group that owns it and having stayed in another one of their hotel I would assume it is excellent! I have entered most as "average" as I did not experience the hotel as a paying client as such. ... Read review

The place to get away from it all
Review of Pestana Atalaia Ocean Aparthotel, Madeira by boojum

Advantages: Quiet, lots of facilities, good food
Disadvantages: Remote from entertainment ( some might see this as an advantage)

A wonderful hotel if you're looking for peace and quiet! Situated on the coast between the airport and the capital Funchal, it has wonderful views of the sea across to the 'deserted isles'. If you're looking for a nice sandy beach to lounge on, forget it. We made a couple of attempts to reach the shoreline about 100 yards away but were defeated both times, once by the fact that the path went into the local houses' gardens, and second by the precipitous ...
...very good indeed. We had booked an apartment and had a large bedroom, large bathroom, lounge and kitchenette, plus a sea-facing balcony. There were sufficient utensils to make a good attempt at cooking, but we were rather lazy and ate out most of the time. The restaurant was good, the food was nice, and the breakfast buffet bar very well stocked with plenty of choices, hot or cold. There was a nice outdoor swimming pool, around which were the usual ...
