Reviews of Madeira Hotels »
It truly is Eden in Madeira!
Advantages: Lots - good food, nice rooms, nice staff Disadvantages: Beware of people reserving sun loungers with their towels!
I first stayed at the Eden Mar hotel in Madeira in 2007, and liked it so much I went back again for another week in 2008!
It is one of a group of hotels owned by the Porto Mare group, and is actually joint on to the Porto Mare hotel and The Reisidence, so you are also able to make use of their failities too.
The staff are delightful - friendly, helpful and always eager to please. Whatever request you have, they spring into action and nothing is ... ...of the Eden Mar is that the accommodation is in suites rather than just rooms, with a small kitchenette with fridge, hob etc behind a folding door. This suited us perfectly as we dont like to eat out every night, and also meant we could keep drinks, milk for tea etc cold in our room.
There are a few different indoor and outdoor pools between the hotels, catering for everybody. We particularly liked the pool which ajoined the spa, as the inside part ...

One of the Finest Hotels in the World
Advantages: One of the Finest Hotels in the World Disadvantages: Coming home
...capital city, set into the cliff face. Perched high on the cliff, the hotel offers superb panoramic views of the atlantic and the city and it's port. Swaying palm trees surround lagoon-style pools and are complemented by the extrodinary service the staff offer. There is a special feel about the hotel, made possible by its juxtaposition of modern facilities with traditional design and subtle architecture. Gastronomically, the hotel offers three fabulous ...

Dorisol Mimosa Hotel, Funchal
Advantages: Comfortable, clean hotel with lots of facilities close to Funchal Lido Disadvantages: A pull uphill to the door - but it is Madeira - everything is uphill!
Bearing in mind the price of this hotel, we were agreeably surprised by the quality. The room was clean and of a reasonable size with a lovely sea view and overlooking the swimming pool. The staff were friendly, especially the chambermaids!
The breakfast was good, with a good selection of food, although being self-service it was a bit of a scramble if you arrived at around 9am, when we all seem to want to eat our breakfasts!
The only problem is ... ...road (as is most of Madeira) although those with cars or using taxis will have no problem arriving at the door. The walk into Funchal is very manageable by us two 69 year olds but we are fitter than some and enjoy levada walking. The levada near the hotel has 150 steps up to it! ...

Pestana Grand Hotel - Funchal, Madeira.
Advantages: Good rooms, helpful staff, free bus into town Disadvantages: Its a bus ride from town.
...decided to go for the Pestana Grand hotel. The hotel was rated as a 5 star by our agent although this site rightly has it as a four-star. We booked on a bed & breakfast basis and with flights and transfers It cost us about £650 each for the week .
On arrival the reception staff were very helpful and spoke excellent English. We had been booked into a mountain view room and asked if we could upgrade to a sea view. This was no problem for, I think, ... ...a bit grotty. Pestana have a number of hotels around Funchal. The first Pestana hotel that we stopped at in the airport coach looked like it was in the middle of nowhere and I think was the budget option so be careful when booking.
the vast majority of the people staying at the hotel were 50 plus, mainly retired folk I think. We only saw a couple of families there. I dont think Madeira is a great place for family holidays due to the lack of beaches.

A good base from which to enjoy Madeira
Advantages: Clean, friendly staff, in good restaurant territory Disadvantages: At the top of a great big hill, evening 'entertainment'
We booked this hotel though Expedia, having chosen it from the many hotels in and around Funchal. We were visiting Funchal in November (still lovely weather for this time of year).
Arriving
We arrived quite late at night (near midnight). Having got a taxi from the airport we were dropped right at the door and didn't see much until the next day. Reception quickly checked us in and we went off to our room. Seemed clean and friendly enough.
The room
... ...the day.
Facilities
The hotel had a nice pool with a snack bar and seating areas for reading/eating etc. My only gripe with the snack bar was that they didn't like to take cash and wanted to charge things to your room - I don't particularly like this way of working - each to his own I suppose. There was an indoor pool in another part of the building and a tennis court. The hotel is part of the Dorisol chain and so guests can use the Mimosa facilities ...
