The place to get away from it all
Review of Pestana Atalaia Ocean Aparthotel, Madeira by
boojum
Advantages: Quiet, lots of facilities, good food
Disadvantages: Remote from entertainment ( some might see this as an advantage)
A wonderful hotel if you're looking for peace and quiet! Situated on the coast between the airport and the capital Funchal, it has wonderful views of the sea across to the 'deserted isles'. If you're looking for a nice sandy beach to lounge on, forget it. We made a couple of attempts to reach the shoreline about 100 yards away but were defeated both times, once by the fact that the path went into the local houses' gardens, and second by the precipitous ... ...very good indeed. We had booked an apartment and had a large bedroom, large bathroom, lounge and kitchenette, plus a sea-facing balcony. There were sufficient utensils to make a good attempt at cooking, but we were rather lazy and ate out most of the time. The restaurant was good, the food was nice, and the breakfast buffet bar very well stocked with plenty of choices, hot or cold.
There was a nice outdoor swimming pool, around which were the usual ...

Pestana Bay Hotel in Funchal, Madeira
Review of Pestana Bay Ocean Aparthotel, Funchal by
bagoproverbial
Advantages: Informal, clean, decent food, right near the beach
Disadvantages: Hideously expensive bar and wines
We stayed at the Pestana Bay "Aparthotel" four-star hotel in Funchal (the capital of Madeira) in August 2005 and I'm happy to recommend it to anyone reading this. It was clean, conveniently placed (i.e right near the beach and with a nearby bus stop for trips into town), not too formal or "stiff upper lip" and the breakfasts were pretty good.
COSTS:
We paid just over £500 each including flights, for a 2-week stay in August, which we thought was ... ...very best points about the Pestana Bay is that the shape of the hotel is such that you can get a great view of the sea, and the afternoon and evening sun (including some sprectacular sunsets) from EVERY apartment. You don't need to worry about your apartment being tucked away and facing nothing more exciting than the people in the apartment across from you. Not only that but from most apartments you can get a great view, facing west, of Cabo Girao, ...

Regency Club Hotel Funchal
Review of Madeira Regency Club, Funchal by
lesleyburden
Advantages: Lovely big spacious rooms and balconies
Disadvantages: Location
...and was top quality food with plenty choice but I found that the hot foods were not particularly hot. However the hotel was very enjoyable in itself but we did not really like Madeira as a holiday destination. Overall the hotel was good but Madeira was not as we expected. ...

Park yourself here and overlook the Ocean.
Review of Tivoli Ocean Park, Funchal by
jo145
Advantages: Good 5 star hotel, super food
Disadvantages: A long walk to town centre
...too!
We choose the Tivoli Ocean Park through a getaway break with our Timeshare, but anyone can stay in the suites at this hotel, there are 23 Terrace suites and 24 Tower suites, ours was in the Tower, which is the central part of the hotel with sea views from the balcony. There are also 245 Deluxe/standard rooms and 21 Superior rooms, plus 4 deluxe for disabled guests. As the name suggests it is part of the Tivoli Hotel Group.
Our balcony gave ... ...in the vicinity of the Tivoli Ocean Park Hotel. Noise is normally minimal and only occurs during normal working hours." We could hear and see cranes working, but it wasn't too annoying, although for people in rooms overlooking the building sites which are on both sides of the hotel it might have been dusty and more noisy. Both hotels being built will soon be completed.
Verdict - a great hotel especially if you can get a bargain price! ...

Hotel in quiet yet accessible area.
Review of Porto Santa Maria Hotel, Funchal by
CHAOS1979
Advantages: Easy access to all activities and public transport.
Disadvantages: Probably quite expensive!
This is a beautiful hotel situated right at the end of the main promanade in Funchal. The views across the ocean, and into the city are perfect, with the sun setting over golden cliffs to the west in the evening towards the harbour. The hotel is situated right by the cable car and taxi rank, with the city centre on your door step, yet it is not a busy area, with very little noise. I have sat by the hotel reading a book in the shade many a time, enjoying ... ...I attended a party at this hotel, a wedding, and it really is outstanding inside, although unfortunately, I didnt get a chance to see any of the rooms. But knowing the group that owns it and having stayed in another one of their hotel I would assume it is excellent! I have entered most as "average" as I did not experience the hotel as a paying client as such. ...
