Pestana Grand Hotel - Funchal, Madeira.

Advantages: Good rooms, helpful staff, free bus into town
Disadvantages: Its a bus ride from town.

...decided to go for the Pestana Grand hotel. The hotel was rated as a 5 star by our agent although this site rightly has it as a four-star. We booked on a bed & breakfast basis and with flights and transfers It cost us about £650 each for the week . On arrival the reception staff were very helpful and spoke excellent English. ...a bit grotty. Pestana have a number of hotels around Funchal. The first Pestana hotel that we stopped at in the airport coach looked like it was in the middle of nowhere and I think was the budget option so be careful when booking. the vast majority of the people staying at the hotel were 50 plus, mainly retired folk I think. We only saw a couple of families there. I dont think Madeira is a great place for family holidays due to the lack of beaches. ...

Park yourself here and overlook the Ocean.

Advantages: Good 5 star hotel, super food
Disadvantages: A long walk to town centre

We choose the Tivoli Ocean Park through a getaway break with our Timeshare, but anyone can stay in the suites at this hotel, there are 23 Terrace suites and 24 Tower suites, ours was in the Tower, which is the central part of the hotel with sea views from the balcony. Pestano Casino Park Hotel

Advantages: Very comfortable, excellent view overlooking marina
Disadvantages: Breakfast menu limited

I have just returned from a week at this hotel with my wife. It has been fairly recently refurbished and is in great condition. The rooms are very comfortable - the room we were in had a super king-size bed. We were on a bed and breakfast basis and, whilst I found the breakfast menu to be acceptable, it was lacking a little in variety as each day was the same. Do you want to stay in Madeira, My dear?

Advantages: five star resort hotel in good location in Madeira
Disadvantages: Hilly situation, reception staff not people friendly
