It truly is Eden in Madeira!

Advantages: Lots - good food, nice rooms, nice staff
Disadvantages: Beware of people reserving sun loungers with their towels!

I first stayed at the Eden Mar hotel in Madeira in 2007, and liked it so much I went back again for another week in 2008! It is one of a group of hotels owned by the Porto Mare group, and is actually joint on to the Porto Mare hotel and The Reisidence, so you are also able to make use of their failities too. ...of the Eden Mar is that the accommodation is in suites rather than just rooms, with a small kitchenette with fridge, hob etc behind a folding door. This suited us perfectly as we dont like to eat out every night, and also meant we could keep drinks, milk for tea etc cold in our room. Pestana Grand Hotel - Funchal, Madeira.

Advantages: Good rooms, helpful staff, free bus into town
Disadvantages: Its a bus ride from town.

We booked on a bed & breakfast basis and with flights and transfers It cost us about £650 each for the week . On arrival the reception staff were very helpful and spoke excellent English. The first Pestana hotel that we stopped at in the airport coach looked like it was in the middle of nowhere and I think was the budget option so be careful when booking. the vast majority of the people staying at the hotel were 50 plus, mainly retired folk I think. We only saw a couple of families there. I dont think Madeira is a great place for family holidays due to the lack of beaches. ...

Pestana Bay Hotel in Funchal, Madeira

Advantages: Informal, clean, decent food, right near the beach
Disadvantages: Hideously expensive bar and wines

We stayed at the Pestana Bay "Aparthotel" four-star hotel in Funchal (the capital of Madeira) in August 2005 and I'm happy to recommend it to anyone reading this. It was clean, conveniently placed (i.e right near the beach and with a nearby bus stop for trips into town), not too formal or "stiff upper lip" and the breakfasts were pretty good. ...very best points about the Pestana Bay is that the shape of the hotel is such that you can get a great view of the sea, and the afternoon and evening sun (including some sprectacular sunsets) from EVERY apartment. You don't need to worry about your apartment being tucked away and facing nothing more exciting than the people in the apartment across from you. Something for everyone.

Advantages: Lots of choice for pools / eats/ drinks
Disadvantages: Fairly expensive daily rate

...the apartment section of the Porto Mare hotel, the apartments are available as timeshares, but also available to book as you would any hotel room which is what we have done on 4 occasions now. We booked the one bedroom apartment, for which you get a large living room with TV (with surround sound kit), DVD, sofabed and dining area including table and chairs. Pestano Casino Park Hotel

Advantages: Very comfortable, excellent view overlooking marina
Disadvantages: Breakfast menu limited

I have just returned from a week at this hotel with my wife. It has been fairly recently refurbished and is in great condition. The rooms are very comfortable - the room we were in had a super king-size bed. We were on a bed and breakfast basis and, whilst I found the breakfast menu to be acceptable, it was lacking a little in variety as each day was the same.
