Regency Club Hotel Funchal
Advantages: Lovely big spacious rooms and balconies Disadvantages: Location
...and was top quality food with plenty choice but I found that the hot foods were not particularly hot. However the hotel was very enjoyable in itself but we did not really like Madeira as a holiday destination. Overall the hotel was good but Madeira was not as we expected. ...

Park yourself here and overlook the Ocean.
Advantages: Good 5 star hotel, super food Disadvantages: A long walk to town centre
...too!
We choose the Tivoli Ocean Park through a getaway break with our Timeshare, but anyone can stay in the suites at this hotel, there are 23 Terrace suites and 24 Tower suites, ours was in the Tower, which is the central part of the hotel with sea views from the balcony. There are also 245 Deluxe/standard rooms and 21 Superior rooms, plus 4 deluxe for disabled guests. As the name suggests it is part of the Tivoli Hotel Group.
Our balcony gave ... ...in the vicinity of the Tivoli Ocean Park Hotel. Noise is normally minimal and only occurs during normal working hours." We could hear and see cranes working, but it wasn't too annoying, although for people in rooms overlooking the building sites which are on both sides of the hotel it might have been dusty and more noisy. Both hotels being built will soon be completed.
Verdict - a great hotel especially if you can get a bargain price! ...

lie down and avoid
Advantages: central Disadvantages: see review
The hotel is more down-market 2 star than 4 star. The rooms are shabby with poor quality furniture. There is no air conditioning - so you open the windows and in come the mosquitoes. Bathroom hygiene is questionable - on arrival the bathroom smelled sour & rancid - like a urinal that hadn't been cleaned for a week. The breakfast is meagre in scope and poor in quality. Brioche & croissants are inedible. The "ham" is some sort of reformed meat product ...

Something for everyone.
Advantages: Lots of choice for pools / eats/ drinks Disadvantages: Fairly expensive daily rate
...the apartment section of the Porto Mare hotel, the apartments are available as timeshares, but also available to book as you would any hotel room which is what we have done on 4 occasions now. We booked the one bedroom apartment, for which you get a large living room with TV (with surround sound kit), DVD, sofabed and dining area including table and chairs. The bedroom has an enormous bed, which is actually 2 doubles pushed together and is very comfortable ... ...with microwave, dishwasher, hob, lots of pots and pans etc. The bathroom is separated into two rooms, one side has a bath and sink, the other a sink, WC and walk in shower, all of which are spotlessly clean. The aprtment also has patio doors in both the longe and the bedrooms that go out onto a private garden shared by approx 5 aprtments, a large lawn with sun loungers outside each apartment, the perfect place to sit at the end of the day with a ...

Well-earned stars
Advantages: Near to town amenities Disadvantages: Cobbled street outside
...side of Funchal. The Porto Santa Maria is at the opposite end of town, right at the border between the 'old' town and the rest of Funchal. It's only a short walk from the hotel to the cable car and the town centre shops (although this is over cobbles, so beware if you need a wheelchair or if you have difficulty walking), and there are plenty of restaurants around.
The hotel itself is spotless, the rooms are well air-conditioned, with access to balconies ... ...hotel on this island. There are two swimming pools: the small-ish outside pool is not heated, although during the summer it is like swimming in a warm bath! The inside pool is much larger and is accessible both via a steep set of steps near the outside pool (although these can be very slippery when wet) and a lift from the hotel foyer. Next to the swimming pool is a jacuzzi and a small gym and there's also a sauna next to the changing rooms if it ...
