Advantages: Appearance, character, central location
Disadvantages: up a steep hill

We had an enjoyable stay at this hotel. What sold the hotel to us was its look. It has a traditional colonial appearance; a Madeira building that guests must have stayed at a 100 years ago. It has its own unique character and is such a contrast to all the big modern concrete blocks of hotels set along the coast. However, it is positioned up a steep hill without public transport. As such it offers magnificent views over the town, the sea and the mountains. Dorisol Mimosa Hotel, Funchal

Advantages: Comfortable, clean hotel with lots of facilities close to Funchal Lido
Disadvantages: A pull uphill to the door - but it is Madeira - everything is uphill!

Bearing in mind the price of this hotel, we were agreeably surprised by the quality. The room was clean and of a reasonable size with a lovely sea view and overlooking the swimming pool. The staff were friendly, especially the chambermaids! The breakfast was good, with a good selection of food,although being self-service it was a bit of a scramble if you arrived at around 9am, when we all seem to want to eat our breakfasts! The only problem is ...
...road (as is most of Madeira) although those with cars or using taxis will have no problem arriving at the door. The walk into Funchal is very manageable by us two 69 year olds but we are fitter than some and enjoy levada walking. The levada near the hotel has 150 steps up to it! ...

A good base from which to enjoy Madeira

Advantages: Clean, friendly staff, in good restaurant territory
Disadvantages: At the top of a great big hill, evening 'entertainment'

We booked this hotel though Expedia, having chosen it from the many hotels in and around Funchal. We were visiting Funchal in November (still lovely weather for this time of year). Arriving We arrived quite late at night (near midnight). Having got a taxi from the airport we were dropped right at the door and didn't see much until the next day. Reception quickly checked us in and we went off to our room. Seemed clean and friendly enough. The room ...

Facilities The hotel had a nice pool with a snack bar and seating areas for reading/eating etc. My only gripe with the snack bar was that they didn't like to take cash and wanted to charge things to your room - I don't particularly like this way of working - each to his own I suppose. There was an indoor pool in another part of the building and a tennis court. The hotel is part of the Dorisol chain and so guests can use the Mimosa facilities ...

The hotel is more down-market 2 star than 4 star. The rooms are shabby with poor quality furniture. There is no air conditioning - so you open the windows and in come the mosquitoes. Bathroom hygiene is questionable - on arrival the bathroom smelled sour & rancid - like a urinal that hadn't been cleaned for a week. The breakfast is meagre in scope and poor in quality. Brioche & croissants are inedible. The "ham" is some sort of reformed meat product ...

Something for everyone.

Advantages: Lots of choice for pools / eats/ drinks
Disadvantages: Fairly expensive daily rate

...the apartment section of the Porto Mare hotel, the apartments are available as timeshares, but also available to book as you would any hotel room which is what we have done on 4 occasions now. We booked the one bedroom apartment, for which you get a large living room with TV (with surround sound kit), DVD, sofabed and dining area including table and chairs. The bedroom has an enormous bed, which is actually 2 doubles pushed together and is very comfortable ...
