Advantages: Lovely big spacious rooms and balconies Disadvantages: Location
We have stayed recently at this hotel and I found it exremely good! The room we stayed in had this fantastic balcony (room 601). It overlooked the marina where the ferry and the cruise liners came in. The hotel itself is very small, but the rooms are excellant with every thing and more to make the stay pleasant. Thye kitchen was fully equipped which is just as well considering the price of eating out. The price included breakfast which was beautifuly presented and was top quality food with plenty choice but I found that the hot foods were not particularly hot. However the hotel was very enjoyable in itself but we did not really like Madeira as a holiday destination. Overall the hotel was good but Madeira was not as we expected. ...
Advantages: A fantastic holiday experience Disadvantages: Location, in particular for those with mobility problems although the hotel is disability friendly.
INTRODUCTION
The Riu Palace in Madeira sits like a white-washed fairytale castle with terracotta turrets, corner towers and grand archways looking out over the sapphire-blue sea. The grounds house brightly coloured flowers and palm trees making you believe you are on a Caribbean island far away.
The Riu Palace is located right on the seafront at Canico de Baixo, only 10 minutes drive from Funchal Airport and 20 minutes drive to the city of Funchal. On arrival at the airport everything ran smoothly and quickly apart from me not recognising my own suitcase!!! We were driven to the hotel in a small mini bus with 5 other people and half an hour later we were sunbathing by the pool. Now that's what I call service.

trip. We paid for the taxi and bought the pics because it didnt add a lot to the total and it was a memorable if slightly cheesy experience. The trip to the gardens is in a cable car not far from where the hotel bus stops in Funchal.
Afternoon tea at Reid's Palace Hotel is not to be missed and I have reviewed this experience elsewhere.
In town are markets and plenty of small restaurants to explore. The local specialities are Scabbard fish, which is really ugly - we saw some in the market - they look like wet black leather sword scabbards with big teeth and bulging eyes. On your plate though they look and taste fine. Limpets are a local treat which we tried but werent to our taste. One thing that you must try are the huge beef kebabs that they serve on 3 foot long skewers which hang from the ceiling in some places or shorter ones ...
