Disadvantages: Smoky atmosphere

Madrid is a city famed for it's architecture and laid back attitude, and while the airport is hardly a famed sculpture, and the staff are anything but laid back, the airport ranks highly among any I have visited. All the staff are attentive, with a great deal of emphasis having been placed on customer service. Another nice feature is the Sala de Expocisiones, which often hosts various displays. Hand luggage, bottles, fags and the cuddle toy... and the sombrero...Madrid Airport has undertaken a complete transformation over the past two years. I regular travel to the city and have to pass through and sometimes spend hours in it. For a European Capital airport the shops in the terminal are a not a numerous as they could be althogh you do get the normal sunglass, bar and "duty free" shopping experience that most airport give you. ...normally get a seat in one of the lounges. One problem that I did find is that trolleys for hand luggage, bottles, cigarettes and the cuddly toy are few and far between so grab one if you can!! Getting to and from the airport is fairly easy although you have to watch the old taxi drivers who like to overcharge!! - The busses are frequent and the metro is clean and comfortable but not recommended if you don't want to make a lot of changes. A rubbish airport, in my opinion, a third class airport. Too busy, a bit like Frankfurt, except smaller. In my opinion go to bilbao airport in the capital of the Basque country. ETA, the basque seperatist group, don't seem to cause many problems there, and it is a nice short flight from england to get there. I really would recommend that you go there.
