Hand luggage, bottles, fags and the cuddle toy... and the sombrero...Madrid Airport has undertaken a complete transformation over the past two years. I regular travel to the city and have to pass through and sometimes spend hours in it.
For a European Capital airport the shops in the terminal are a not a numerous as they could be althogh you do get the normal sunglass, bar and "duty free" shopping experience that most airport give you.
The airport is always clean and the staff helpful and you can normally get a seat in one of the lounges. One problem that I did find is that trolleys for hand luggage, bottles, cigarettes and the cuddly toy are few and far between so grab one if you can!!
Getting to and from the airport is fairly easy although you have to watch the old taxi drivers who like to overcharge!! - The busses are frequent and the metro is clean and comfortable but not recommended if you don't want to make a lot of changes.
My verdict - go healthy airport - shame that they are building a new one in the next five years in a different locations and shutting this one down
