Take your granny to meet a tranny
Review of Gula Gula (Madrid) by sadoldbag

Advantages: Great concept - loads of fun, cabaret's a laugh, fantastic salad bar
Disadvantages: Food is only OK, can be very busy, only if u like that sort of thing

Gula Gula is now a well established restaurant centrally located in Madrid, right on Gran Via. It serves fairly ordinary food - basically Spanish with a pan-european slant. Nothing is outrageously over-priced, but nothing is cheap either. Expect to pay 30 euros a head. For dinner they always have a cold anti-pasti type salad buffet, which can be quite nice. They have an a la carte but it is common to go for the set menu, which is twenty five euros ...
...Just the salad bar or a main is 20 Euros. They do things like gnocci, lasagne, veal with red pepper rice, honey roast turkey. Quite bland really compared to more traditional Spanish food, which I prefer but I guess this kind of food is trendy - it's like going to ASK or Franky and Benny's - you get reliably OK food, but not more. The puddings are a bit different to the average Spanish restaurant though, - they do things like cheesecake and tiramisu, ... Read review

There is not only Spanish food in Madrid...
Review of Parrilla El Gaucho by carmen999

Advantages: good food, very cheap
Disadvantages: packed at week-ends

Parrilla El Gaucho. Calle Tetuán 34, Madrid. It was doubting upon if to discover my secret or not. Because is difficult to find a place there before publishing an opinion about it and to attract still more people (if you all travel and go there...). But I am going to risk myself and I am going to share one of my favourite restaurants. I discovered it by luck. It was New Year's Eve and we were walking around the centre of Madrid trying to find a ...
...the typical menus of that day. It was difficult, really. We entered a little by chance, to take something and attracted by the good environment. By fortune they served food at the bar since the restaurant was completely reserved. We decide to give it a try and we don't repent. So much, that since then we have returned several times and carried there various friends, that have been delighted. It is an Argentine restaurant and if for meat lovers is ... Read review

Kapital Club
Review of Kapital by EarthGirl

Advantages: Big, with lots of dance space
Disadvantages: not the best atmosphere

The Kapital club is billed as the biggest club in Madrid, it has five floors and lots of bars, the top floor has a movie lounge, the 4th floor is a cocktail and karioky bar, and the three floors below each have a dance floor playing a different type of music. Insted of paying for your drinks at the bar you are given a card on which the bar tender writes down what drinks you have had, you then present this card at the till on your way out and pay ...
...they won't let you out of the club without it. (they will assume that you are trying to get away with not paying for your drinks.) The people in this club were all young and realy dressed up for a night out and are mainly young spanish people who come from all over the city and the surounding areas. I found the people to have quite a lot of attitude, and it wasn't the best atmosphere I've ever experienced in a club, how ever the music was good and ... Read review

Nouveau Cuisine - Madrid style
Review of El Amparo by sherylmiller

Advantages: High-quality food, English-speaking staff, extensive wine list
Disadvantages: Very Expensive, small portions

El Amparo was recommended in a well-known travel guide and cited as being among the top five in Madrid. On arrival, it was easy to see why. Located in the up-market district of Salamanca this eaterie oozed style, sophistication and good taste. The wine collection was on display as we walked up the stairs to the small, but well laid-out, two-floor dining room. Serveal of the waiters spoke English - a plus in Madrid, and the wine waiter was a joy ...
...were followed by beautifully presented and superbly tasting seafood dishes, though there was a large selection of other meats. The menu was a mixture of traditional spanish and mediterranean dishes. Desserts favoured chocolate - the house speacial being a delicious chocolate souffle. All-in-all the food and the whole dining experience was well-worth the price and a must for any food-lover visiting Madrid. ... Read review

The oldest in Madrid
Review of Botín by ladamaboba

Advantages: Very good products
Disadvantages: Not very expensive

The name of the restaurant is “Sobrinos de Botín” but if you say BOTIN everybody knows that your are speaking about the oldest restaurant in Madrid that is placed in a part of the town called: Madrid of the Austrias Kings”.... This classic and Madrilenian restaurant was the first that I visited to invite my mother with my first money earned, now my husband and me go frecuently, specially when we have foreing gest to invite. Botin is very close ...
...is a place typical for tourists and for everyone who wants to known the old Madrid and SPECIALLY for everybody that loves GOOD MEALS. The typical dishes are cochinillo (little porc) and lamb, deliciously roasted in its furnaces (wood ovens), sincerely I recommend any kind of meat but if you prefer fish it will be fresh and very good cooked. Its desserts are fantastic: Rice with milk, flan.... But...not only food is important..., the old building ... Read review
