ok i am going to give a more detail view of Madrid. First of all Madrid is the greenest city in Europe , people don´t know that but is true you´ll find historical parks like Retiro, Campo del moro, fuente del berro,el capricho parque del oeste and on the other hand you have new parks like Juan Carlos I close to the airport and huge parks like casa del campo. A good itinerary to see part of the old Madrid starts at the royal palace, is a towering structure that has already 250 years of history and it is considered one of the best in Europe. Then should take calle mayor and you´ll find at your right La plaza de la villa, It's surrounded by 15th to 17th-century aristocratic mansions that have been taken over by the Town Hall. At this point if you want you can get lost on the narrow streets or if you prefer stay on calle mayor and you will find plaza mayor,The area south of Plaza Mayor, is full of narrow cobblestone streets lined with 16th and 17th century architecture. From the Plaza, take Arco de Cuchilleros, packed with markets, restaurants, flamenco clubs, and taverns, to explore this district. in calle cuchilleros you can see or eat in Casa Botín: 'World's oldest restaurant'. if we surround the plaza we can take again calle mayor and go straight to find puerta del sol the most popular, crowded, eclectic, lively and commercial in all of Madrid. It is from here that you reach the famous streets: Preciados, Carretas, Arenal It is really THE place to meet, since it opens onto so many other places and because it goes from Arenal to the big part of Gran via. In Gran Via you can see some of the best buildings in Madrid you should take this street to alcala enjoing an european influence arquitecture and arriving to plaza cibeles where Real Madrid celebrates their victiries and you can stare at banco de españa on your right, palacio de comunicaciones is like a cathedral front of you and palacio de linares onyour left. This is just a little itinerary around Madrid but is good enough for a quick view. Well at this point you propably will be a little bit tired so go to bar an ask for two cañas con tapas.
Yes, I agree with you Madrid is a great city. You could put a few more details in your op though, name some other places to eat, drink, etc, and perhaps more detail on some of the sights.

I too like Madrid but I feel you will need to write more detail than this to persuade people.

I haven't been to Madrid, in fact I've never been to mainland Spain but you make it sound like there's plenty to see. Good first op, just needs a few extra details for the VH rating. Welcome to Ciao! Emma :)
