...In August this year I travelled to Northern Thailand for a 2 week trekking adventure. Like many others, what I realy wanted to do was find a beach like Leo Caprio did in the film by the same title but as we were travelling in the monsoon season, we were advised to go north. That worked out to be the best bit of advice that anyone has given me when it comes to travelling. We began our journey by catching a night train from Bangkok up to Chiang Mai. The night train cost me the equivelent of £8.00 GBP and it took 12 hours. This alone was quite an experience!
Once in Chiang Mai, we went to find out what treks were available and how long we could do a trek for. We eventually settled on a trek that was organised by the Chiang Mai Guest House and we were informaed that our guide for the duration would be a guy called Cimi, who in my...

Advantages: great base for serious trekking Disadvantages: not much else to do
...After the laid-back, nature-oriented, happy town of Pai, Mae Hong Son was a real shock. We thought that a town on the Myanmar border would be even more wild and remote, but this turned out to be a wrong assumption. It seems that close proximity to the opium barons is lucrative.
Mae Hong Son is full of stores carrying modern supplies and restaurants serving farang (foreign) food. There is a steady stream of moped traffic and even the occasional 4x4, so keep that in mind if you are thinking of eating roadside. The scenery is beautiful, but the town is not one with nature like Pai. Rather it is very much a giant suburb surrounded by jungle.
The jungle and the steep mountains are very appealing. If you decide to trek from here, be ready for a rugged, difficult climb on most of the days you are out. The climbs are hands...

...Hopefully the title will get your interest on this one – and believe me, frogs were weirdly abundant during our stay on the island of Koh Tao! The weather was great and we had a chance to relax (after months of, well, relaxing & travels in South East Asia!). We visited Tao after a stay in Kho Pha Ngan, where we went to the Full Moon Party.
WHERE IS KOH TAO?
**************************
Koh Tao is a small island in a group of 3, on the south-eastern ‘leg’ of Thailand. It’s the first on your way down, followed by Kho Pha Ngan, then Ko Samui (Ko Samui is the biggest of the three).
WHY VISIT?
***************
Koh Tao is renowned for it’s diving, and this is indeed the main reason we came here, choosing to dive in the crystal waters of Tao, over Pha Ngan or Samui. It is by far the best of the 3 as there are many different sites you...
