At what point does a reputable bus company become a total pain in “le derriere”? Well to me, and Mainline, as soon as you get on the bus or look at the confusing bus timetable or wait for a bus…. So basically whenever you do anything near a mainline bus. I get on a bus, mainly Mainline, everyday day twice a day. The reason why I mainly get on the Mainline bus is because it is the only one I can get on to travel the five miles to school every morning and then the five miles back again. The particular number bus I get on is the X78 to and from Sheffield to Doncaster Via Rotherham and Conisbrough and Meadowhall.
I get on this bus at Conisbrough every morning (unless I miss it) at 7:42. Or at least I used to get on at that time. The bus company decided to change the time of the bus, without deciding to tell anyone – apart from the drivers!
To enable myself to get on the bus at thins time takes a great deal of ….urm….. well running as I leave the house promptly at 7:42 and, in winter, slide down the 84% ratio steepness of my drive onto the road, if going at speed being aided to come to a gentle rest is a brick wall. In the other seasons it is just a run. Well what happened was it was a Monday and as it was the start of the week I decided to get myself to school on time, so this meant going to the bus early. I left at about 7:36 which took a great deal of self-determination and proceeded on my way to the bus stop when, to my great dismay, I saw the bus thunder past without me on it. I was appalled. I kept on going to the bus stop to wait for the next one and check to see if the bus times had changed. Which, according to the bus stop timetable they hadn’t. The next day I decided to get to the bus stop very early and I checked again whether the bus times had changed, but nay, no changes had appeared on the bus timetable. The bus promptly came and promptly went, this time with me on it. And during that, while at the bus stop but on the bus I seeked enlightenment from the only person who could aid me in my quest to get on a bus in time; the bus driver. Who said “Yeah, the bus times have changed. Have you not seen the signs?” Me “What Signs?” Bus driver “the ones at the Sheffield Interchange” Well seeing as I don’t ever go to the Sheffield interchange – or as he noted the Rotherham or Meadowhall stations. I didn’t see the elusive “signs”. Well eventually the bus stop times changed so I realised that the bus times had changed and it was now a whole seven minutes earlier, which when you’ve got to do your air in the morning, is a long time.
That was just the waiting for the buses, when you actually get on the buses they are actually quite pleasant, apart from the apparent lack of suspension or driver intuition (to slow down at speed bumps). Sometimes they smell a little worse for wear but you get used to that within 11 seconds. Sometimes there are cans and bottles littered around the bus, yet the buses don’t seem to have a bin. Which if there is such a litter problem – which I seem to thin there is, you would have thought they would have had one. Well not just one for your tickets, you can’t squeeze a bottle through a hole the width of paper – believe me I've tried! Other than the clanging of the cans sliding from the front to the back to the left to the right to the front of the bus there is only one other problem. And this isn’t caused by the bus company, but it still annoys me. It’s the way people show a total disregard to the people around them, and obviously their eardrums. Yes you guessed it it’s the people who listen to there personal walkmans, Personal CD players, MD players or MP3 players so loud it’s a wonder their eardrums don’t rupture every time a cymbal is crashed or a drum beat. I listen to music on the bus, but I am always conscious about whether the people around me can hear the music or not. I try to make sure it is not unless you are sat next to someone who is sat on your pocket so you cant, or don’t want to, put your hand in your pocket to turn it down. Other than when Mainline decide to change the bus-times and when they finally put bins on buses the ride would be nearing pleasant. But that is as far as it gets. Along with this op. Mainline could also do with some new buses – the ones I get on are about a G reg, which, in my book, is pretty old. But other than the afore mentioned problems a reasonable ride to get you from A to B. But I can’t wait until I can drive!
