Advantages: clean, friendly, great location Disadvantages: not the cheapest on offer, but worth the money
The Maison Dupuy hotel ofers everything you could want from a hotel stay in New Orleans. Situated 30-seconds from lively Bourbon Street, it is right in the heart of the French Quarter yet removed enough that the late-night partiers do not cause any intrusion.
Our room was spotless, comfortable (the beds were fantastic!), and overlooking the main courtyard below which housed the swimming pool, hot tub, and a seating veranda from which to sit with a drink and enjoy the Louisiana sunshine.
There are plenty of facilities on-hand as well, from restaurants and bars to free internet access and valet parking.
For the final few days of a long two-week trip, it offered us the perfect base to relax, recharge, and then head out to enjoy the unique delights of the French Quarter and New Orleans in general. ...
Advantages: Good, friendly and comfortable hotel. Disadvantages: Lack of lift and noisy air-con.
During our recent trip to Jersey we stayed at a lovely little guest house. A friend booked it for a group of three couples for a week and another couple booked separately to join us for the weekend. We went from Jersey Airport to the hotel in a taxi (a very swish stretch mercades!). Although there is a good bus service the taxi is my recommended way of getting there ~ it would be a bit of a struggle getting ...
Advantages: City Centre hotel with bar selling alcohol Disadvantages: None
The Hotel Maison Doree (2*) in central Tunis is one of many hotels at the lower end of the price scale. We stayed for 3 nights in Feb 2007 & the price for a double room, bed & breakfast, with ensuite bath/shower/loo worked out at around £19 per night. It's traditional French colonial style, the rooms are a decent size with high ceilings, old-fashioned dark wood furniture, and nicely shuttered windows. Lovely Tunisian-style tiled walls in corridors & staircases. They also offer rooms with ensuite shower but no loo even cheaper.
Staff speak good English (although a smattering of French will get you a long way in Tunisia), and are very helpful.
Drinking alcohol in Tunis isn't easy - many of the cheaper hotels don't serve alcohol, but the Maison Doree has a small TV lounge and attached bar.
It's ideally placed just off the Place ...
