Advantages: Interesting analyses Disadvantages: For specialised audiences
Connerton's thesis about the communal/social aspects of memory prompted me to recall the proposed research project of a friend of mine in a doctoral programme, dealing with aspects of received knowledge of children - how do children of each successive generation, across social classes and often across cultural divides, seem to know certain things that are not taught to them by adults, particularly as adults seem to have forgotten these things themselves, but that are known by other children. How is this collective childhood body of knowledge maintained and continued without any formalised structure of preservation or transmission? This type of question can have relevance toward many types of study.
Connerton's distinction between social memory and historical reconstruction is an important one. We might know the factual (or, at least ...
Advantages: Good, friendly and comfortable hotel. Disadvantages: Lack of lift and noisy air-con.
During our recent trip to Jersey we stayed at a lovely little guest house. A friend booked it for a group of three couples for a week and another couple booked separately to join us for the weekend. Although there is a good bus service the taxi is my recommended way of getting there ~ it would be a bit of a struggle getting ...
Advantages: clean, friendly, great location Disadvantages: not the cheapest on offer, but worth the money
The Maison Dupuy hotel ofers everything you could want from a hotel stay in New Orleans. Situated 30-seconds from lively Bourbon Street, it is right in the heart of the French Quarter yet removed enough that the late-night partiers do not cause any intrusion.
Our room was spotless, comfortable (the beds were fantastic!), and overlooking the main courtyard below which housed the swimming pool, hot tub, and a seating veranda from which to sit with a drink and enjoy the Louisiana sunshine.
There are plenty of facilities on-hand as well, from restaurants and bars to free internet access and valet parking.
For the final few days of a long two-week trip, it offered us the perfect base to relax, recharge, and then head out to enjoy the unique delights of the French Quarter and New Orleans in general. ...
