Brussels on a budget

Advantages: easy to get to, the Grand Place
Disadvantages: Mannakin Pis is dissapointing, takcy tourist shops

Question What does one do when you want to celebrate finishing the taught part of a Masters degree and want to go away but are so broke even the cheapest trip to Spain is not an option? Answer. Book a very cheap flight for a mini break to Brussels the capital of Belgium. I did this in June 2003 and I had a great time. I flew with Ryanair from John Lennon airport in Liverpool to Charleroi airport in Brussels. Or so I thought it was in Brussels. It was near enough an hour from the airport to Midi railway station. The connecting bus is a rip off at 10 euros. Since there were four of us on the way there we took a taxi that cost us 35 euros. The airfare was really cheap. It only cost £20 for a return fare including all taxes. Due to the European Parliament Brussels has cheap hotels at the weekend instead of during mid week. We were ...

Belly dancer decapitation a real possibility

Advantages: Excellent food and service
Disadvantages: Belly dancing safety hazard

to happen. CONCLUSION I can highly recommend the food, and the service was also excellent; very friendly and helpful. They could also speak English so if you can't speak French you won't encounter any problems. To feed 4 people for about 90 Euros seems pretty good value to me considering we were all stuffed by the end. I would check when the belly dancer performs though. We were there on a Saturday night and this is something you would either want to see or avoid! CONTACT INFORMATION Chantelaine Du Liban, Place du Châtelain 7, 1050, Brussels, Belgium. Review of Chatelaine Du Liban, Brussels

A brief bite into Brussels

Advantages: Stunning architecture and lots of lovely different beers and chocolates
Disadvantages: Not a huge amount of well known attractions

, it wasn't exactly ideal for popping out to buy a litre of lait. Yves St Laurent, Gucci, Cartier and Valentino don't do bread or tea bags?. Nearby, is Place du Sablon which is a delightful square surrounded by expensive looking antique shops. I used to walk through this square every morning on my way into work, when I was not being lazy and hopping on a tram or bus. There is an open air antiques market held in the square every Saturday and Sunday, and it has a lovely olde worlde atmosphere. For more recognisable shops try the Rue Neuve which is Brussel's main pedestrianised shopping zone, it stretches for a good mile or so on both sides of the street. Recommended buys in Brussels are of course wonderful Belgian chocolates (more later), Belgian beer and beautiful Brussels hand made lace. The best lace shops seem to be located ...
