The ups and downs of Zagreb

Advantages: Elegant architecture, plenty of green spaces, lots of museums, good food
Disadvantages: Not so good for people with mobility problems

is the fascinating Mirogoj cemetery with its grand mausolea and exceptionally attractive landscaped grounds. Alternatively you could take a tram to Maksimir Park which boasts the first public promenade in south east Europe, dating from the end of the eighteenth century; the park has artificial lakes, several pretty pavilions and is a great place for a picnic. Zagreb is not just a nineteenth century city, there are some older parts such as Tkalciceva which is quite pretty and quaint, but much of it has been rebuilt. Still this is a nice area for strolling and shopping (there is some interesting little galleries and shops here) and it's also a good area to eat as there are lots of restaurants including one or two konobas (a konoba is a traditional restaurant serving typical Croatian fare). However, while the food is simple ...

Zagreb's colourful market

Advantages: Fascinating, colourful, might get to sample some Croatian foods, shop for a picnic
Disadvantages: Can't buy some things if you're in a hotel

Dolac is Zagreb?s very colourful central fresh produce market. It is situated in the area just behind Trg Bana Jelacic and you can access it though a small lane where you see the flower market start. The market was opened in 1930, having been built on the site of a slum clearance; it was agreed by the city's bigwigs that the houses there were not a fitting sight for visitors to a capital city and so they were duly demolished. I was delighted to read that in his speech at the opening of the market, the mayor of Zagreb Dr. Stjepan Srkulj said "?During my visit to Holland this year, ladies and gentlemen, I can honestly say that I did not see a market that was as nice as this...? - and, you know, it is rather special. Beyond the flower market you can either climb the stone steps to the market proper or go into the main indoor section ...

Review of Dolac Market, Zagreb

ZAGREB - little VIENNA

Advantages: pretty E. European city
Disadvantages: pretty similar to others on Balkan

center of the city, which is most attractive to see, is possible to be seen if you take tram/buss and take a ride for about 10 stations, because the city busses and trams are mainly all passing through the center of city: from Maximir Football Stadium and a beautiful Maximir Park to an attractive Student Town, on the other side. Accomodation in Zagreb is very expensive, but there's a resort for backpackers and students for 15 E per night www.ravnice-youth-hostel.hr It's a beautiful and clean place with really pleasant staff (ask for Kelly). When I was there, in October the weather was gorgeous, not too hot or too cold, city was full of people and the hostel had entire bus of Australians visiting. Every morning I had real Australian breakfast ready to go. Zagreb, comparing to other Eastern European cities is costly, but comparing to Slovenia ...
