Before 2006 I had never been on an aeroplane before. My girlfriend and I booked a holiday to Borneo for October 2006 so this was to be my first ever (very long) flight which we booked with Malaysia Airlines.
About Malaysia Airlines Malaysia Airlines have been around since 1947, but back then, they offered a very small and restricted air service. Today, they have won countless awards and fly people to more than 100 destinations across 6 continents.
Price We booked this flight as part of our package holiday so I am unable to give an exact price for this flight. We paid £860 for our holiday which included 11 nights in Kota Kinabalu and 3 nights in Kuala Lumpar as well as out in and out bound flights and 8 internal flights.
Check In The check in desks for Malaysia airlines opened 3-4 hours before your flight departs. With most long haul flights, you have to check in at least 2 hours before so for anyone who loves doing a bit of duty free shopping, it would be ideal to use Malaysia airlines as you can have 3-4 hours of shopping, knowing your luggage is safely check in. We arrived at the airport 3 hours before our departure and arrived at a very short queue that moved very quickly due to the fact that there were several check in desks open. We queued for around 5 minutes and then were called to the desk. Once at the desk, our passports were checked, our luggage was weighed and we were asked all the usual security questions. We travelled shortly after the suspected bombing at London airports so the lady at the check in desk also advised us of what items were still restricted and offered for us to pack them in our suitcase before we checked in which I thought was very useful.
Boarding We began to board about ten minutes before our flight which personally I liked as it meant we would not be sat around waiting on a plane, it would literally be on the plane and then take off! As we boarded the plane, we were approached by a friendly member of staff who asked to see our boarding pass, she then directed us to our seat. Just inside the plane there were free English and Malaysian newspapers for people to read.
The Plane I have never been on a plane before this journey (but have been since) and I have to say, that there was definitely extra leg room when we flew with Malaysia Airline. My knees, once seated came about 6 inches from the seat in front of me so I was fairly comfortable in my chair - good job too seeing as I had to sit in it for 13 hours. Underneath the chair in front was a footrest that you could choose to have up or down. The plane smelt nice and clean and there was no rubbish on the floor, or on any of the seats.
Food and Drink As well as the regular meals that were bought round, there was also free food and drinks would you could have whenever you like. All drinks were complimentary, even the beers and cocktails, although they do not bring them round, you have to ask, which we did. My cocktail was lovely and tasted even better seeing as it was free! We could also ask for sandwiches, biscuits and crisps that were also free. Even with the main meals, we actually had a choice of what we wanted to eat, a fish dish, chicken or beef. I have found that with other airlines, you often just get one bog standard meal for everyone so it was certainly nice to have a choice. The meal was hot and very tasty (I had chicken by the way!) and it came with a desert which was treacle sponge and also a cup of orange juice. Tea and coffee was also bought round while. My girlfriend is vegetarian and she really enjoyed her veggie meal. She was impressed with their service as apparently on most airlines, they take round the special meal first and then take everyone else's meal round so she was pleased that she actually got to eat her meal at the same time as me.
Entertainment In the back of every chair is a small TV screen which was about 9 inches square so a fairly reasonable size. I really liked this as it meant that you could watch whichever film you liked rather than on other planes when you all have to watch the same film.
There was a large selection of entertainment - you had the choice of about 8 recent films (showing in English cinemas at present). As well as these films you also had a 'Classics' channel which showed all time favourite films such as Runaway Bride, Meet The Parents etc. They also have around 50 foreign channels which showed Bollywood type films (with English subtitles)
They had a channel which showed short programs such as Friends, The Catherine Tate Show, The Simpsons etc
There was a separate children's channels with children's TV programs and various kid's films.
There were 6 radio stations, playing pop, jazz, rock music etc and there were also a selection of albums that you could choose to listen to. There was a large selection of albums ranging from albums currently in the charts to albums by The Beatles so I felt that they offered everyone something to listen to.
One of my favourite channels was a Games channel which offered a choice of around 25 - 30 games. There was all time classic games such as scrabble and tetris as well as puzzle games so these were great to pass the time. Each chair had a remote that you could pop out of your armrest. On the remote were the controls for the TV and it also contained all the controls for the games.
The Staff The staff were very friendly and always seemed pleased to help you. The staff dressed in traditional Malaysian uniforms which I thought made this airline stand out from other and added a nice personal touch.
Summary I would 100% fly with Malaysia Airlines again. Our flight was on time, the plane was clean and the staff were friendly. The fact that you get extra leg room as standard with the operator was an added bonus! The food and entertainment were much better than any other company I have flown with! If you get the chance, use Malaysia Airlines.
Advantages: Serves many routes, excellent service and hospitality and beats Singapore hands down! Disadvantages: Has the monopoly on London-KL direct flights so can be quite pricey for this route alone.
...nothing comes close! About Malaysia Airlines Malaysia airlines have been around since the mid 1940’s in one form or another. Today they are one of only six, five star airlines as recognized by skytrax and are regularly the winner of the world’s best cabin crew, something I whole heartedly agree with! Check In Desks open around 4 hours prior to departure. For premium cabins (First and Golden Club) you can also check in online or over the telephone. ... ...you will not be disappointed. Malaysia Airlines – Still going beyond expectations! Review wrote based on flights in Feb/March 2009 from London to Kuala Lumpur. Retail cost of flight £2900 return inc taxes. Flight from London-KL-Sydney return would have cost £3100 for comparison. If you have any questions about the review or MH then please shout out at me! ...

...year. Well, I'm originally from Malaysia and each time I go back for a holiday, Malaysia Airlines is ALWAYS the airlines that i'll take.
I've never considered any other airlines, really, and you may all wonder why? I must say, Malaysia Airlines certainly do provide one of the best services so far in my experience (though the only other airlines I've used before are Jet Air, Singapore Airlines and British Airways.)

Advantages: Very hospitable, great customer service, no delays, no fuss, very welcoming Disadvantages: You won't want to leave the plane!!
Malaysia Airlines have flown me between Heathrow and Kuala Lumpur twice a year for the last 8 years and I wouldn't fly with any other airline. Firstly, if you're flying too and from Kuala Lumpur on a regular basis, join the Enrich frequent flyer reward programme. You will soon amass points that can then used for upgrades to business class when you want a real treat. Malaysian custom is to be very polite and hospitable and its no different with Malaysia ... ...many destinations and I rate Malaysia Airlines and by far the very best. Their hospitality is excellent with a genuine effort to consistently go the extra mile for their passengers. If en route to Malaysia I wouldn't fly with anyone else. In eight years we've only experienced one delay (not due to MAS) and this only kept us by 25 minutes. Fly Malaysia Airlines...I highly recommend them. ...

Advantages: Great entertainment, food Disadvantages: Its SO expensive to upgrade
I flew with Malaysia Airlines in October 2006 when I travelled to Borneo. In total, we had 8 flights with Malaysian Airlines as we took part in a few trips and had some internal flights.
We booked our holiday as a package so we did not specifically book this airline, it just came as part of the package.

...not cater for children at Malaysia Airlines. We thought this strange but made do. On the return flight there where other children on board. Guess what? They got chidrens meals!!!! Luckily we had bought food this time for our little one at the airport. Disgraceful. Apparently our travel agent had booked the meals (Another review of them to come - Travelmood) but Malasia had not implemented the booking. Shoddy. Appart from that they where very tasty.
... ...haul aircraft go. 34 inch leg room (3 more than the last time I flew with BA!)
Top Tips- 1. Confirm your seat for internal flights a day or two before departure. We got the rep to do it for us after the first debacle. Its not like the U.K. where you just rock up and on you go. Seats are allocated.
2. If traveling with children ensure before departure that they are going to provide a meal for them especially if they are as fussy as mine!

Reviews which might be of interest for "Malaysia Airlines"
Advantages: legroom space, price, service Disadvantages: choices of food and beverages offered
Malaysian Airlines is Malaysia's leading airlines and their well worth of their title. I have been using MAS for long and short distance flight and is well worth the money you spend. Their service is great - remember flying with them to India.... service is very nice, food, might need a bit improvement on the taste and choices on menu. Other than that you get ample leg space compared to other airlines. Once i have travelled on their Business class and it was excellent compared US airways and Jet Airways.
Well, advice to passengers who might want to use this airlines: sign up as a MAS offer membership (its free). with this you would be entitled to their offers which are regularly updated on every weekends. Compare this airline in every aspect and you will never go wrong.
Well at times, you might think the price is high.... Yes, if ...
Advantages: Modern aircraft. Excellent in flight service Disadvantages: Mediocre ground service. Food is so so
MAS,the Malaysian flag carrier bills itself as the "Golden Airline" and in many ways it is justified in doing so. I have flown on MAS many times, within Malaysia, and from Kuala Lumpur to London and other places.
I have always found the in flight service to be excellent, the in flight entertainment to be more than satisfactory, and there is quite a lot of leg room on board. The aircraft seem to be well maintained and the fleet is a modern one.
The food is quite good, although frankly I have eaten better on Air Lanka and UTA French airlines. The flight attendants are very friendly and are very helpful to mothers travelling with children. If I have a criticism of Malaysia's national airline it would have to centre on the ground service, which I think could be improved. ...
Advantages: Divine intervention cause the flight to be delayed by only 20 minutes Disadvantages: At least 90% of the passenger had a different God.
I fly MalaysiaAirlines most of the time but my most recent flight BKK - KUL MH785 on the 26th April 08, was something of a heads up. For the first time in my many flights with them, the flight announcement during the flight was done with a religious overtone by the co-pilot with the name of Fazli. I find it offensive and unacceptable and so does many of my fellow passengers going by the surprise look on their face. It seems the safe arrival and the time of arrival is all allah's will ! The Captain going by the name of Mahendran, a hindu I believe actually allowed his co-pilot to make that announcement, punctuated at least 3 times that everything is happenning due to allah's will. ...
