This review is written from the opinion of their business class product (Golden Club Class).
I have been lucky enough to travel on many different airlines including the fantastic Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific, however since flying with Malaysian (MH) nothing comes close!
About Malaysia Airlines Malaysia airlines have been around since the mid 1940’s in one form or another. Today they are one of only six, five star airlines as recognized by skytrax and are regularly the winner of the world’s best cabin crew, something I whole heartedly agree with!
Check In Desks open around 4 hours prior to departure. For premium cabins (First and Golden Club) you can also check in online or over the telephone. Service at the check in counter at London Heathrow
was flawless. Prompt check in, a generous 30kg baggage allowance and also the usage of the premium security channel. From check in to the airport lounge took me 15 minutes on a busy Friday evening in Heathrow T3, no mean feat!
The Golden Lounges at LHR and KL are fantastic, plenty of comfy seating, special massage chairs and slumber rooms, wireless and fixed internet terminals and a full bar service. There is also a full food service which varies depending on the time of day you visit. It really is a fantastic place to start your flight and avoid the carnage of the terminal.
The Plane Boarding commences sixty minutes before departure to help ensure the plane can leave on time. Premium passengers are called from the lounge once economy have boarded, allowing you enough time to relax before the journey and to save wasting time at the gate. Once onboard the service really kicks in. All premium guests are welcomed by their name rather than a ‘Sir’ or Maam’ and offered champagne or the finest fruit juices. The staff really take care of you and take a real interest in you as a person rather than just a seat number, showcasing true Malaysian hospitality.
The seat in business class is huge! It is a good armchair size and reclines to a full 175degree angle, giving you a practically lie flat bed experience. You are provided with a selection of pillows and a duvet to make your sleep as comfortable as possible. Should you wish, there are also a number of massage settings on the seat to help relax your body and increase circulation, something great for DVT!
The selection of food and drinks is fantastic, full bar stocked with the finest spirits and beers and of course the obligatory Dom Perignonvintage champagne! All served in the finest cut crystal glassware.
Food is fantastic and is truly a world cusine menu. There is a selection of food to choose from with starters, main courses and desserts. Mains can range from eastern noodle based dishes to western beef fillets and lobster thermidor. There is always something for everyone! Once your meal is over there is a selection of gourmet coffee’s and nespresso should you wish to finish off your meal with sophistication.
Food and drinks are available throughout the flight with the staff more than happy to make you something up mid flight should you get hungry. Nothing ever seems a problem for these guys, they genuinely take delight in serving you!
Entertainment Folding out of the arm rest comes a 12” touch screentv screen with the ‘Select’ video on demand system.
The system provides a selection of the latest blockbusters, tv shows, music albums all on demand with enough choice to suit everyone from the kids to the more mature. There is also a live updated news service, the ability to send e-mails and texts and interactive games. As per any other major airline you can also view the stats of the flight should you wish. The system rivals those of Singapore Airlines, Cathay, Emirates and Qantas and really is first class. The remote also doubles as a mobile phone should you wish to call back to earth at $10 US an minute.
Arrival On arrival disembarkation is very prompt, at arrival at many of their airports you will be issued with a premier immigration pass, allowing you to jump the queue. As a premium passenger you will also have priority baggage, which in most cases is waiting on the belt when you get there unlike some other airlines I could mention!
Summary Whilst there are many other well known airlines that you would probably choose you really should give Malaysian a shot given the choice. I have had the opportunity to fly in all three of their classes and to me each one of them provides extreme value for money. As we find ourselves here in the recession of 2009 a lot of these planes are flying with significantly lighter loads so there are a lot of good deals out there at the moment including with Malaysian. Whilst you may want to choose Singapore or Qantas or any other well known airline over Malaysian I can assure you that you will not be disappointed. Malaysia Airlines – Still going beyond expectations!
Review wrote based on flights in Feb/March 2009 from London to Kuala Lumpur. Retail cost of flight £2900 return inc taxes. Flight from London-KL-Sydney return would have cost £3100 for comparison.
