Malaysia Airlines have flown me between Heathrow and Kuala Lumpur twice a year for the last 8 years and I wouldn't fly with any other airline.

Firstly, if you're flying too and from Kuala Lumpur on a regular basis, join the Enrich frequent flyer reward programme. You will soon amass points that can then used for upgrades to business class when you want a real treat.

Malaysian custom is to be very polite and hospitable and its no different with Malaysia Airlines (MAS). Whether its terminal three at Heathrow or check in at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, you get a warm greeting and all the assistance you require. In my experience, nothing ever seems too much trouble for either the MAS ground or flight crews. Many years ago I mentioned that my wife and I were on honeymoon and we were pleasantly surprised on-board with a bottle of bubbly and box of chocolates. Its clear that all of their staff take a real genuine pride in customer service.

We've always booked directly with the airline and have found them to be the cheapest on every occasion for a direct flight. The flight takes around 12/13 hours and a return has been priced as low as £340, whilst the most we've ever paid is £550. You may find cheaper direct flights with Airasia.com, but this airline are the equivalent to Easyjet and you'll pay for meals and other bits and bobs on board. Additionally, they fly from Stansted and not Heathrow. I've not flown with Air Asia and can't vouch for their service.

There was a time when if you booked directly with MAS they would give you a free internal flight in Malaysia. We've taken this offer up twice to hop on from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi or Penang. I'm not sure if this offer still exists but its definitely worth asking if booking direct.

On board the MAS Boeing 747 you are shown to your seats without any hustle or fuss and made to feel comfortable right away. The leg room is fine (I'm 5ft 11) and there are entertainment units built into the back of the seat in front of you. Entertainment includes up to date movies, music channels and all of the main TV channels that most will recognise. For the kids there are some video games and for the flight buffs you can view the tracking screen to exactly where the flight is positioned on its path. The seats recline adequately enough to get a snooze during your flight, but like most airlines take a neck support pillow with you. I've never had trouble sleeping and the atmosphere on board is actually quite serene.

Meals are adequate in economy class. Like any other airline the meals are never going to win any cullinary awards but neither are they inedible. There's usually, two or three choices on each menu and the hosts/hostesses give you plenty of time to eat each meal. There are plenty of hosts/hostesses on board and you won't be kept waiting for assistance.

The staff are also very child friendly and will keep them entertained and made to feel welcome. However, the good old days when you're little one could visit the pilots are unfortunately over for all airlines. If you are flying with a small baby then they will allocate you a seat facing one of the 747's bulk heads. Into the wall you can fix a basinette, supplied by MAS, in which baby can lie flat and enjoy a good snooze. Vital if you are going to be on-board for 13 hours; trust me I've been there!

Over the years I've flown with many airlines to many destinations and I rate Malaysia Airlines and by far the very best. Their hospitality is excellent with a genuine effort to consistently go the extra mile for their passengers. If en route to Malaysia I wouldn't fly with anyone else. In eight years we've only experienced one delay (not due to MAS) and this only kept us by 25 minutes.

Fly Malaysia Airlines...I highly recommend them.
