As an Australian living in the UK I have become something of an expert on long-haul flights! As I prefer to spend my money on something a bit more tangible than 24hrs travel, I usually go for the cheapest flight available and put up with the discomfort. In May I was called home unexpectedly and needed to book a flight within the next day or so. The usual cheap deals had all been booked up and Malaysian was the best deal available. This proved to be a silver lining as Malaysian is definitely one of the best airlines I have flown.
Check in was quick and all the clerks were polite and friendly (a small thing I know but it certainly gets the flight off on the right footing!) The seats all had personal video screens allowing a choice of film / tv / flight information and computer games. This is a definite plus on long haul both for your own interest and in keeping any children flying quiet! There was ample leg room and the seats are reasonably comfortable. At just under 6 foot and large framed as well this is most important! My only minor complaint would be that in common with most Asian based airlines the cabin temperature is a bit warm. (I was told this was because most Asians prefer it that way).
The hosties were fantastic! Prompt and very helpful. Unlike a lot of long haul flights they are not shoving food at you constantly. The food served was in the better class of aeroplane food and there were sandwiches and snacks available to any who asked.
On the return we sat on the ground in Brisbane for 2.75hrs while they unpacked and repacked the plane to get the lists to agree. Usually this would be a real negative in viewing the airline. However, the staff kept us informed and were gracious in their apologies. I must admit to being a little sick of the orange juice by the time we were airbourne but overall full marks for their handling of this problem.
I will be looking at Malaysian as a first choice from now on.
