Advantages: Feels safe. Clean. Good for a daytrip to relieve the monotony. Disadvantages: It's only a town - no scenery.

See from the air, Male seems curiously crowded, being an almost square island, packed to the edges with buildings, in fact its about 2km by 2km, and everyone owns a car! Arriving there by boat, (it's too small to sacrifice land for an airport), it bustles with life. The market is a friendly affair and free samples of Maldivian produce abound (at least they do if you have an official guide). If you visit the Mosque don't forget polite dress code - no shorts etc, although they will oblige and lend you a sarong (and very nice I looked in it too!). Souvenirs aren't up to much, but it's a working town, so what do you expect. For the uninitiated, the Maldives come as a surprise, being two countries in one - a) the bit where the Muslim population live,
and b) the islands where tourists and hotel staff live, and ne'er (or hardly ne'er) the twain shall meet. Male is the main exception, as it often figures as a day excursion from some of the closer-in islands - we stayed on Bandos, about 20 mins away by fast boat.
You wouldn't exactly call it a holiday venue, especially as it's "dry", but it is an interesting relief and contrast from a week of total relaxation on an island, where you can get very bored unless you want to take part in all the water sports going.
I must add a contrary view to the 5* opinions of Sri Lankan Airlines. We travelled with them recently and had a variety of problems.
We were due to fly from Sri Lanka to the Male in the Maldives at 0700 (and pick up a connecting sea-plane to the resort). However, the day before we were due to fly we were told that the flight had been re-arranged to 0500, so we missed most of our night's sleep.
However, that was only the start of our problems. After an early wake-up call, we hung around only to eventually find that the flight was put back until 1900. This meant that we couldn't get the seaplane that day, and we lost a night in our resort.
Coming back was no better - we were delayed about 6 hours. We felt sorry for our fellow passengers as a number of flights were being cancelled, including one to Australia. It seems that ...
facilities, so we had to turn around and go back to our hotel in Doha and leave some luggage behind. Its a nightmare airline, stay away from them. Who gave them the 5 star rating, they did themselves. I fly all over the world and have flown countless airlines and I never had as much trouble as I did on Qatar Air Sucks. If you want to miss your flight, pay exorbitant fees for access luggage and deal with indifferent staff that does not speak English, fly Qatar Air Sucks. Also, the economy seats on the new 777-200LR are so tight, my knees we up my throat and if the person in front of you decides to recline their seat, forget it. then, to top it off, we arrive in MaleMaldives and they lost our luggage in Doha. I can go on and on and on about Qatar Air Sucks. Save yourself the trouble, take another airline. They are no where near 5 star. They are a 1 ...
Advantages: only flown once-maybe i missed something Disadvantages: completely incompetant
I flew with Monarch from Gatwick to Male (Maldives). My nan had saved up for this trip for my 16th birthday and had been several times herself.
We were the first people to check in, we knew this because they (very helpfully) opened it for us. My nan asked if it would be possible to get a window seat, explaining she wanted me to experience the view as we flew into the Maldives. We were assured that of course that was fine, it was all very polite and we went away smiling!
However, when we got onto the plane and to our row (9) the smile was instantly gone. Not only did we not have a window seat, ours was (we thought) the ONLY row without a window at all! Even for me, only 5 ft 3, it was extremely claustrophobic. The grey plastic "wall" curved round and made me feel hunched in- for the whole of the 10 hour flight.
As soon as ...
