***This is a review only of the Spa facilities at Malmaison Newcastle, which can be used by hotel guests or visitors. As we did not stay overnight here, I cannot comment on the rest of the hotel, though everything we say and experienced was exquisite, and I would definately stay at one of their sister hotels if I am travelling away from Newcastle***
Having recently suffered from a bout of depression that left me feeling pretty rough, I decided to treat myself and my best friend to an afternoon being pampered at Newcastle's Malmaison. Their Petite Spa had just been refurbished, and so I decided this was the place to go. My friend flew up from London and we had lunch on Newcastle's Quay-Side, visited The Baltic Art Gallery, and headed over to Malmaison for our 5pm appointment.
There are lots of treatments to choose from, ranging from Indian head Massages and manicure/pedicures through to full body massages and mud-wraps. We decided on the E'Spa Total Holistic Aromatherapy Body Care.
What a great choice!
When we arrived, we were given lovely fluffy white robes, and shown to a beautiful changing suite with double sinks, full length mirrors, 2 showers and a loo, all kitted out with lovely toiletries, cleansing pads for removing makeup, moisturising lotions and body wash, etc.
The decor was minimal and very-up-to-date with wooden benches and hooks for your clothes. We changed into our robes and took our things out into the corridor where there were lockers (free), and then went to the Relaxation Suite, as directed. This was amazing.
Dimmed lights, gentle music, the sounds of water from the water feature, a very ambient room where the Piece d'Resistance were big black leather massaging chairs which you controlled with a remote control. There was also cold spring water from a water cooler available, and scented candles burning. We were asked to fill in a card, detailing any problems we had, general health, that sort of thing, and then we were shown through to a double treatment room.
Two lovely therapists then went through the treatment we were going to have, describing what would be done and helping us to choose the scented oils they would be using. We were then asked to remove our robes (the therapists left the room at this point, for privacy) and we lay face down on the beds, and covered ourselves with the lovely soft white towels provided. The beds had a hole at the top, for your face to sit into, and they were heated, which felt amazing!
The treatment then began, and the therapists brushed our skin, and then worked a skin scrub treatment into our backs, which was all grainy and course - to remove dead skin and rejuvenate us. This was removed with hot towels in the most professional way imaginable - no water dripping over us or anything, just sweeping up our backs to remove the scrub. Then the back massage began with scented oils - there really are no words for this - it was heavenly! With dimmed lights, candles burning and very calming music in the background I could just have gone to sleep!
When all the knots and tension were removed from our backs, the therapists held up towels so that we could turn over onto our backs, and then they gently covered us over with them. We then had a full body, face and scalp massage which were out of this world - the face massage included a facial which cleansed , scrubbed and moisturised, and particular attention was given to shoulders and neck, to relieve tension.
The attention to detail was amazing, from the quiet way the therapists instructed us (to turn over, etc) so as not to ruin the mood, to the way they gently removed final traces of makeup before beginning the face treatment, even down to how quietly they moved around the bed so that you weren't thinking about them at all, just how great it all felt. When the final face therapy had finished, they placed cool pads over our eyes and then left the room for 10 minutes or so (might have been longer, I've been informed that I was snoring gently at that point!) - and then they came back to continue working on our neck and shoulders for a further ten minutes or so.
When they were finished they left us in the room to wake up a bit, and said we could go through to the Relaxation Suite when we were ready.
We did, and spent a further 20 minutes or so relaxing and playing in the chairs and drinking cool water before going back to the changing suite to shower and get ready. It was an amazing experience and well worth £55.00 each - other facilities we could have used (and will, next time we go) included Sauna, Steam Room and Solarium.
I can truly recommend Le Petite Spa to anyone who feels in need of a calming relaxing time - its amazing!
