Blue water, sun - and brilliant diving!

Advantages: Fairly warm, easy to get around, plenty of wrecks
Disadvantages: Lots of deep sites - make sure you're qualified!

...is whether to stay on Malta or Gozo (there's also the option of staying on Comino, the smallest island - though it only has one hotel). I actually got round that by staying a few days on each of the 2 bigger islands. While Malta has a large number of resorts with plenty of restaurants and clubs, Gozo tends to be much quieter - not to say that there aren't quiet areas on Malta. But I'll mainly focus on the diving. Malta isn't the place to go to dive ...
...which there are plenty in Malta - other examples are the Blenheim Bomber, a plane in about 40m of water, and the Carolita barge, which also lies near Valletta. The Rozi is a pretty little wreck near to the Gozo ferry which was sunk as an attraction for a tourist submarine, but now serves as a magnet for divers. It can apparently get very busy, but when I was there there was only one other small group on the wreck. She's a small boat, but the upper ...

Manikata - MALTA

Advantages: Small farming Maltese village
Disadvantages: not many shops

Manikata - A small country village in Malta Manikata is a small typical Maltese village. The main industry of Manikata is farming. Manikata is located on a farming valley which is rich in produce. Much of the produce is harvested and sold off at framing markets. On the outskirts of Manikata there were two military camps in the 1960's. One was home to Royal Malta Artillery and the other was a British Army camp which hosted many different regiments ...
...no longer active. One of them has been turned into a holiday style village "Hal-Ferh" Just about a 10 minute walk is Golden Bay, one of Malta's best known beaches. AT present there is a new Hotel complex being built replacing the GOLDEN SANDS hotel which was built in the 1970's. This hotel has now been demolished and a brand new Hotel has been built. This was the setting for the queen and President Bush recent visit. Manikata has a unique styled ...

Advantages: Simply go to the best places - as stated
Disadvantages: To be detailed in another review...keep watching

...would not give up this island which translated means "haven" This is why the Maltese Island and its people were awarded the george cross. During one particular raid the church was packed with people when this bomb went directly through the centre of the dome roof. It did not explode!!! So, today all visitors can see this incredible man made lump of explosive designed to elliminate life standing upright in a church of god! If your into history or ...
...first person stepped on the Island right through to the modern today. The Grand Master Palace. This is in Valletta, Malta's capital city. Bustling with people and many a tourist place...Just watch out for those tourist restaurants... You can avoid this by going to a lovely little place called "Eddies" lots of seats outside and for a cafe restaurant the waiters are VERY good. But please give a tip because they work for 40 lira a week, thats about ...

The ancient heart of Christianity in Malta

Advantages: Beautiful architecture, interesting paintings, fascinating tombs
Disadvantages: None really

Mdina in the middle of the island of Malta was long the capital of the island until the Knights of St John of Jerusalem established Valletta as its headquarters on the island. However, the rules of the catholic church said there could only be one cathedral on the island, a cathedral being distinguished by having a throne (Latin ‘cathedra’), and Mdina already had the cathedral. The result is that in Valletta there is a co-cathedral, ie a cathedral ...
...St John, the throne in Mdina being at the time for the archbishop of Malta. Mdina sits atop a hill in the centre of the island, far enough away from the coast to give a degree of protection from marauding pirates. When the island was liberated from the Saracens in 1090, a church was raised on the site of the house of the Roman governor at the time of the shipwreck of the apostle Paul on Malta in 60AD, and who received Paul and even brought his father ...

The treasures lie within and are rich

Advantages: Unique Caravaggio, amazing artwork, interesting tombs, tapestries
Disadvantages: Can get crowded

St John’s co-cathedral in Valletta is found in the heart of the city, on Republic Street and Merchant Street. Work started on the church following the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, when the Knights of St John of Jerusalem held out and defeated the Ottoman Turks. The building was completed in 1577, and dedicated to St John the Baptist, the patron saint of the knights’ order. It is called a co-cathedral, since there was already a cathedral on the island ...
...the Knights were determined to construct a capital worthy of the name, which would have to include a cathedral, they arranged for this co-cathedral to have a throne (cathedra) for the Grand Master of the order. From the outside, there is no indication of the artistic treasures waiting on the inside. The church is still very strong in Malta, and the visitor is asked to show respect for a house of God. There is a dress code, which if you do not meet ...
