An elegant oasis of opulent charm

Advantages: Great courtesy, large, comfortable room, peaceful, well-located
Disadvantages: Some rooms could usefully be modernised

Le Méridian Phoenicia has for a long time styled itself as the premier hotel in Valetta, and there are certainly grounds for agreeing with that verdict. It boasts many famous vistiors, and when there were all the documentaries about the 80th birthday of the Queen, they showed some footage of a ball hosted by (the then) Princess Elizabeth and Duke of Edinburgh in this hotel. Prince Phillip was stationed in Malta in the Navy after they were married, ...
...regularly had afternoon at the Phoenicia Hotel. The hotel is situated just behind the massive city walls of Valletta, not far from the main bus station at Floriana. From the hotel, the heart of Valletta is just a leisurely stroll away, taking you past the prime minister's residence, the Barrakka Gardens and into the bustle of Republic Street and St John's Co-Cathedral. Although it nestles behind the city walls, the hotel is not dwarfed by them. ...

A 5-star experience in St Julian's, Malta

Advantages: Comfortable, relaxed, air-conditioned, fabulous breakfast, free WiFi
Disadvantages: Nothing major

The Radisson SAS Bay Point is a relatively new, 5* hotel in St Julian’s on the north coast of Malta, having been built around the turn of the millennium. The hotel is a 20 minute drive from Luq’a airport and 15 minutes from the centre of Valletta. I was here for work, for a conference organised by the governing party of Malta, who clearly pulled out all the stops, so it is conceivable, although I guess unlikely, that the overwhelmingly favourable ...
...an accurate picture of the hotel. With that disclaimer, I will set out what I have seen. WHAT THERE IS IN THE HOTEL The entrance level is on level 2 of the hotel, with the reception desk on the right. On the left is a coffee bar (the Bridge Bar) with leather armchairs and sofas around coffee tables, while ahead of you is another bar (Ritter’s), which is quite spacious, and leads out onto a terrace The third eating venue off the lobby is Le Bistro, ...

Great location, and fantastic sea views

Advantages: Lots of facilities, spacious room, friendly and helpful staff
Disadvantages: Some areas are closed in the off season, the walk to bars and restaurants can be a stretch

...hotel forms part of the Corinthia Beach Resort, which includes the five star Corinthia San Gorg Hotel, so there are plenty of facilities. I think I counted 4 swimming pools, plus lots of sun decks. There is also a Spa, but I didn't venture in. There are several restaurants to choose from, though the outdoor snack places were closed for the winter season. Café 24 do a wonderful but huge BLT, as well as lots of other lunchtime / afternoon snacks. ...
...have cereal, toast, meats, cheese, continental, cooked breakfast, and there was lots of fruit on offer. We didn't have any evening meals at the hotel, as there was so much to choose from - Paceville and Spinola Bay were both walking distance if you're young and fit. Despite this, the hotel is pretty quiet. Our room was spacious, well equipped, and with a not too extortionate mini-bar (though we did mostly stock up from the supermarket). We had a ...

Excellent 4* half-board

Advantages: Wonderful setting
Disadvantages: A little remote

Ours was a first-time visit to Malta and as we left it very late booking we took the risk of "allocation on arrival" although specifying 4* this takes away some of the risk. We were not disappointed - arriving at night you see the imposing Selmun Palace floodlit at the top of a hill with the hotel set in an L-shape alongside. The setting is one of the most impressive features of this hotel. Situated at the north of the island at the top of what ...
...hotel offers an impressive view on one side over Buggiba Bay and on the other side the little island of Comino with Gozo beyond. The room itself I considered a little basic for a 4* but was spacious and clean with a good sized bathroom. The balconies on each room were small and best for standing and admiring the view. Two plastic chairs were provided on the balcony but there would be no room for a table for an al-fresco drink/snack. Hotel facilities ...

RIU Seabank, Mellieha Bay, Malta

Advantages: Next To The Beach
Disadvantages: Very expensive bar, expensive phone calls and rude locals

...week long stay was the RIU Seabank. As a worldwide chain I trusted the travel agent in this recommondation. In my opinion any one due to book or is thinking of booking at this hotel should read on as this hotel may not be for everyone. LOCATION The Riu Seabank is situated in Mellieha Bay, 3km downhill from Mellieha Village. Situated at the bottom of a steep hill, it is a long and tiring walk to the top if you are infirm or have children, when ...
...reach the very top. If you do not want to be tied to the hotel on an evening then this would not be the hotel for you, the local buses do terminate at 9pm and the only other method of transport is a taxi which are extremely expensive. There are only two other bars and restaurants within walking distance from the hotel and no supermarket ( besides the one in the hotel which is not cheap!!!). HOTEL The Seabank is a five floor hotel, the amount of ...
