We've just come back from a weekend away at the Malvern Hills Hotel. Having gone down for a friends wedding we decided to stay for the weekend and do a bit of walking.

LOCATION
The hotel is pretty easy to find as it is on the main road through from Malvern to Ledbury. It is opposite the British Camp car park and is obviously a hotspot for walkers and day trippers alike. Locationwise it couldn't be any better. You can easily access the hills from the hotel in both directions and we found ourselves a circular walk which actually went straight past the hotel - ideal, no faffing around parking cars or figuring out how to get from A to B.

EXTERNALLY
We had a slight concern when we arrived as the hotel was surrounded by scaffold, however we're not the sort to panic and it was clear that the work was external render only and wasn't happening over the weekend. We didn't see a builder all weekend - what it's like during the week though I can't comment on. The car park is very busy during the day - probably people trying to avoid the British Camp pay and display car park across the road. There were certainly a lot of people in the garden eating and drinking. We ended up parking on the road outside which is a bit of a pain if you have lots of luggage.

INTERNALLY
Once inside it's a bit like walking into a pub - lots of dark wood and swirly patterned carpets!! The lad on reception was very good though and flew through the main points of the hotel and our room - it was comical actually because he was so quick! He did say that he was the only one on reception so couldn't be too long.

THE ROOM
We had a standard double room which had an en-suite shower room. The room and shower-room had quite obviously been redecorated recently - the bedroom although compact was clean and light; the shower-room was spacious with classy fittings. All in all we were impressed with it. There was a view towards Wales from our window and I would expect that most rooms have a spectacular view of some sort given the hotels location.

The room was fitted out with a wardrobe; bedside cabinets; dressing table and easy chair. A lovely flat screen TV was hung on the wall oppposite the bed and was provided with Freeview. This was a nice touch as the TV saved on space in the bedroom. A hairdryer was fitted to the dressing table drawer and tea & coffee making facilities were on top. Another nice touch is the fact that you get a couple of bottles of Malvern water in your room when you arrive!

The normal bathroom products were available and the white towels were clean and large.

BREAKFAST
We only ate breakfast in the hotel as we were out and about during the day. It seemed like a popular eating venue though so presumably the food is good! Breakfast was a nice selection of cereals; fruit & yoghurts followed by a typical cooked breakfast; meats & cheeses; haddock; omelette and plenty of toast! I asked for toast on our first morning and was provided with three rounds! The food was fine and the breakfast room was light and airy. Although the hotel was full the breakfast room was never crowded.

COST
Our room was £95/night on a B&B basis which I initially thought was pricey - however having spent some time researching the other local hotels it seems that this is very much the norm. The one thing I would say is that you should check your bill carefully - we had an £3.80 bar bill on our room tab which was actually someone elses.

CONCLUSION
Would I go back again? Yes - it was a nice hotel. Quiet at night and the staff were very polite. The location is excellent if you want to enjoy the hills. One interesting thing to note if you have children is that there were several notes around about the bar not accepting children after 4pm. Worth noting if you want to take your kids with you - I don't think this is the hotel for you.
