Manchester Airport is situated just outside the city of Manchester. It is very easily accessible to many cities in the North of England. Each terminal at the airport has its own motorway exit which is very clearly signposted, and there is an internal bus service to help you get around.
The airport boasts 3 terminals and 2 runways, and has new routes being added all the time, with airlines realising that people who want to travel from the UK don't always live in or near London. The airport itself is very easy to navigate, and is quite highly staffed, so there is usually someone there to help you.
Terminal 1 is the largest of the 3 terminals, where most of the charter flights (monarch, air 2000, jmc etc) leave from. In this terminal there are a lot of shops and dining areas, so the wait for your departure goes quite quickly, there are the usual newsagents, fast food joints and duty free shops, but there is also a Harrods which as far as I know is the only one outside London.
Terminal 2 is where many of the scheduled airlines leave from (Virgin Atlantic, Cathay Pacific, Thai Airlines etc). This terminal has much less to offer than terminal 1, there is a small selection of shops to browse round, but not nearly enough for the 3 hour wait which most scheduled flights require nowadays.
I have never used terminal 3, however this is a base for many of the British airways flights and also the domestic flights which leave Manchester. As far as I know there is the usual selection of shops here, but with the flights being mainly domestic, there shouldn't be too long a wait at this terminal. All of ther terminals have smoking and no smoking areas, once you have gone through passport control, however this is a bit strange considering that now they have increased security, many airlines won't allow you through passport control with a cigarette lighter.
A lot of airlines seem to be adding experimental routes to their Manchester flights now, especially to various cities in the USA. However, many low cost airlines favour the nearby Liverpool airport, as the cost of landing fees, hangar fees and the like, are said to be very expensive at Manchester, whereas other smaller airports are willing to reduce these costs to offer a more varied and economical service. If you book a holiday departing from Manchester, there is nearly always a flight supplement which reflects this.
The airport itself has good and plentiful general facilities (toilets, seating areas, etc), however at certain times of the week (Sundays, late eveinings and early mornings) these can be a bit grubby. There are also a number of huge long stay car parks, many of which are available at a discount through tour operators, and the short stay car park is very easily accesible by lift, so if people come to pick you up from the airport they don't have to fight for a downstairs car park to help with your baggage. If people are coming to pick you up, one tip is to ask them to arrive at the airport about 30 minutes after your scheduled landing time (teletext and the airport's website both offer the arrivals service), otherwise it can be quite expensive on parking, as the baggage claim can take up to 90 minutes.
My personal opinion is that although this can be quite an expensive airport to use, weighed up against the price of a flight/coach/train transfer to one of the cheaper airports, it still offers good value for money, and with more charter airlines using this as a main hub airport package holidays from this airport only cost marginally (if anything) more than alternative airports).
Manchester Airport also has very close ties to the National Trust, who carry out environmental work in the vacinity, to try to counteract some of the environmental problems which the airport may cause. One way in which they raise funds for this work is through the aviation viewing park (AVP. The AVP has over 100 car parking spaces, and is a great place to take children for them to learn about aviation, there is a small educational centre, an aviation shop, toilets, snack bar and a few raised vantage points which help you get a better view. The AVP is parallel to both runways, so you can get a great view of the aircraft landing and taking off. I have also found through a couple of friends that coming here can help people who are scared of flying, as they an see how many people are travelling by air every day. The opening hours of the AVP are seasonal, so it may be a good idea to call first, the charge is usually around £2.50 per car and 50p per passenger other than the driver.

...many, many years. Living in Manchester itself now means that Ringway is the obvious choice, but even when I lived at the seaside we still flew from here – something to do with the fact that my holiday / travelling requirements generally extend beyond Jersey and Tenerife – practically the only 2 places served by Blackpool airport. So yes, Manchester it had to be. Come next Tuesday, I will have flown to 11 or 12 countries from here, approximately ... ...point. This year Manchester hosted the Commonwealth Games, and got rather excited about it months before they began. Tickets were on sale ages before, shops appeared stocking the official merchandise, and volunteer requests made the rounds. At work we were even asked how many languages we could speak just in case there’s a problem with any of the foreign customers who appear – after all, on your first trip to Manchester from some far ...

Manchester Airport formerly known to the 'older' jet set as Ringway has gronw up a matured gracefully, it is of course not without its controversy, more terminal space with the new Terminal 2 (T2), and who could forget the antics of Swampy and his mates trying to stop the building of the new staggered parallel runway 24L/6R with its assortment of additional taxiways and new 2nd airport fire station situated half way down to the south side of the ... ...now Terminal 1 (T1)...

...with JMC in February from Manchester airport.
My parents were flying out a week before us (lucky things) so I was persuaded to drive them up there to save money on the parking. The first thing that I will point out is that Manchester airport is brilliant to get to from the North or South (M6) but a nightmare from the East, such as Lincoln (tiny windy roads across the Penines where the hills just about killed my poor little car loaded up with parents ... ...the Ringway car park outside Manchester (eventually, that is... the directions are terrible). We were very impressed by the fact that the bus for the airport left within about 5 minutes, with only 2 couples on it. The driver was a maniac too, we made about 12 miles in less than 10 minutes.
We checked in without a problem and we took our own food to avoid the high cost in the airport. Again we avoided the shops in the main airport so we got bored ...

Who doesn't like flying?
I personally love it and will get to give it another go in a few weeks, flying to Tenerife from Manchester Airport (Ringway). I have only been on a foreign holiday twice, both times flying from Ringway.
I have to say that it was a much better experience than I was expecting, I was expecting simply to check in and sit down and wait for the flight. Each time I have flown it, has been ... ...shops selling electrical goods and Manchester souvenirs.
* Clothes - Tie Rack/Shop? etc
* Duty Free shop.
And once you have spent up, you can sit and wait for your flight to board, with an excellent view of the stand ( sort of parking area for the planes)
As well as shopping opportunities, there are lots of amusement machines and vibrating chairs (for those with a kinky side, lol!!)
Once you have checked in and gone through the security checks, ...

Advantages: Flies to many locations Disadvantages: Large, hard to navigate and very disorganised
Unfortunately for me, Manchester Airport is a necessity. Leeds/Bradford, the best airport in my opinion, doesn't fly to as many places (and invariably Manchester is sufficiently cheaper for me to think it warrants a visit. I have flown from there 7 times, and each time I have vowed I would never return.
Manchester Airport is massive. It has three terminals and flies to every country imaginable. The place is just too disorganised though, let me tell ... ...So getting to the airport is easy which is one thing it has over Leeds/Bradford. It's just off a junction of the M62 and luckily the signs are pretty easy to follow. Don't let this trick you into thinking that this reflects on the airport however!
Turn up four hours earlier than the supposed take-off time and somehow find your way to your check-in desk. The check-in clerk is normally friendly enough, but will inform you that they don't yet know ...

Poor all Richard Branson the man who had the midas touch till he got involved in the train buisness. Virgin trains must be a nightmare for the man but not as much as a nightmare for the traveller. I have used Virgin trains on several occasions travelling from Manchester to London. lucky I have been able to take advantage of some of the special offers unlike some. If you need to be in London for an important meeting in the mornings I'd recommend you went to The airport instead of the station as its alot cheaper. On all the journeys that I have taken with Virgin trains I have had some mishap eg the train mysteriously didnt arrive one time and they have never been on time delays being the norm. If i was you Richard sell up and let someone else try ...

Being of the age where it seems everyone and I mean everyone is getting married around you. I have been to more weddings than I care to mention this year. With these weddings there has been stag do's, taking in such cultural hotspots as Amsterdam, Cardiff, Newcastle and Brno (Czech Republic). All these places chosen for their museums, architecture, and many art galleries on offer. Lumped inbetween Cardiff and Amsterdam was a one night extravaganza in Manchester, not my choice of destination and obviously for legal reasons and for fear of breaking the unwritten Omerta of "what happens on the stag stays on the stag, I cannot divulge any possible events on the stag, but having sought written permission from the groom-to-be and the best man I am able to share with you a review of the hotel I stayed in?..
